I JUST PURCHASED AN ASUS MOTHERBOARD MODEL A7N8X-X, AN AMD XP 2600+ PROCESSOR AND 512 MEG OF DDR PC 3200 RAM. I AM ALSO USING A MSI MODEL MX441SES-T (64 MEG)VIDEO CARD. I AM RUNNING WINDOWS ME (I UPGRADED FROM WINDOWS 98 2ND EDITION UPGRADE). THE COMPONENTS WERE REPLACEMENTS IN AN EXISTING SYSTEM. I AM CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET THROUGH A EATHERNET HUB TO A CABLE MODEM.

MY PROBLEM IS WHEN I TRY TO SET A SCREEN SAVER OR DOWNLOAD SOMETHING FROM THE INTERNET THE MONITOR GOES INTO WHAT APPEARS TO BE A HIBERNATION MODE. THE ESCAPE KEY WILL RE-ACTIVATE THE MONITOR BUT WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO ACCESS THE INTERNET PROPERLY.

I HAVE A SECOND COMPUTER ON LINE AND CAN SHARE FILES BETWEEN THE TWO UNITS AND HAVE NO INTERNET PROBLEMS.

PLEASE HELP A LOST COMPUTER SOUL!!!!

THANK YOU,
IBESPARKY

Are all power management options disabled in Windows and in BIOS?
If so, then also do not enable any screensavers.

Win ME is a very poorly designed OS which has many inherent problems.
If you did not have the same problem with Win 98SE, then is there any reason why you cannot revert back to it?

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

I have found WinME to work fine... once you tweak it... You need to shut down all the useless programs running background, adjust the power settings the way you want them, dump useless things like the folder with the software for installing AOL and other ISPs. Do a little tweaking and let us know how it is running. You can get more info on tweaking at Black Viper. (http://www.blackviper.com/)

As a side note... all CAPS is considered to be shouting around here (and on the web in general). It is difficult to read and will cause many to simply ignore your questions, so take the time to turn off that CAPS Lock key...

Have you had the same problem ever since you loaded WinME?

When you got your new mother board, did you reformat your C: drive and reinstall Windows or did you just use the old HD as is?

Did you load the motherboard drivers for the A7N8X-X?
Did you get the latest Detonator driver for your video card?

Installing a new motherboard and trying to keep the same installation of Windows rarely works out right. The problem is compounded by trying to upgrade to WinME - this doesn't get rid of the current problems; it just adds to them.

It is usually best to start from scratch. Reformat your C: drive, reinstall Windows (I prefer Win98SE to WinME), install the MB drivers, install the video drivers and DirectX 9.

I have also seen a problem like this with a hardware malfunction. But in this case I would start with a fresh install.
