Does anyone have a cure for this? The PC I'm working on wont shut down on a restart, but will on a hard shutdown. Someone told me you could download a file called 'dcom.exe' but I cant find anything like that. The PC is a 90mhz Pentium with Win98.

Hi Lysdexia,
What options do you have available when you go to Start>shutdown>?
Restart would not shut down the system but, would infact Restart the system http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif Not trying to make you feel dumb, maybe a little more info of whats happening would help.

Sorry Bassman,I agree, what I meant was when I try shutdown/restart or shutdown/restart in MS-DOS mode, the system hangs on the Windows shutdown screen. Thanks Yoda for your link, it seems to be for Win95 only tho.

Have you looked through this Shutdown troubleshooter (http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm)? I am confused too. Are you saying that it will shutdown, but won't restart? Or that it hangs on both? We recently gave up on the Restart part, but three quarters through the above troubleshooting list, got the puter to shutdown. We figured the restart wasn't absolutely necessary since could get system shutdown.

Thanks Kayofcircles, I'm sorry I'm confusing people, as the system will do a hard shutdown I wont worry about the restart. Just thought it would be nice if I could fix it for these people.

lysdexia : It would definitely be nice if you could fix it, but probably depends on how much of your life you want to devote to it. Some puter stuff can drive you mad. And, though it pains me to say so, I think there are some problems that cannot be fixed without starting completely over. Total wipe and reinstall..which seems pretty drastic for a minor problem. But, hey, if you are as stubborn as we are, I wish you the best of luck. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
