Hi everyone,
My dilemma is i have a Aopen motherboard pentium I, 133mhz and everything is operational except when i put a usb port in a psi slot it is not working. I have noticed on my motherboard that there is a set of pins for a usb port, but the usb card i have does not have any data cords attached or does it have provisions to put one.
So will i have to buy another usb port with this provision or will i be able to use this psi card on my computer.
I have enabled usb in the bios.
I know the usb port works as i have tried it on a pentium 4 computer and windows 98se recognized the hardware and downloaded the drivers etc, and the mp3 player worked.
The usb port i have has an OPTI chip on it and i have checked out their website for another driver incase there was an updated version, but the site said to download driver from the windows98 cd which i had done already.
I have tried everything i can think of, besides buying another card.
can anyone help
regards zena

Hello zena1959,

Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

Are you getting a specific error message when you add the PCI card?

Have you checked in Device Manager following the card installation to see if there are any conflicts...you may have an IRQ conflict...you may need to try the card in another PCI slot. Check under Properties to see if there are any conflicts...

I was wondering why you have the PCI/USB adapter card if you already have a motherboard header to attach a USB "plate" on to? A USB "plate" just fits into a PCI rear opening on the case and then attaches internally to the motherboard USB header??

Thanks for your quick email response, i have finally got around to trying out your ideas but they didn't work either. Firstly i am sorry if i did not explain myself properly but i dont have a pci/usb adapter card. I was just trying to put a usb port straight into the motherboard.

No i don't actually get an error message when i insert the card and boot up the machine, the windows program just asks for the drivers etc, like normal. The drivers all load happily and machine is ready to use.

When i looked in the device manager there was a conflict between other devices and direct memory controller ?. So i did move all the pci cards around and reloaded their drivers, as windows requested. But there is still a conflict in the device manager.

The "Other Device" root directory is now gone, but under the "Universal serial bus controller", there are 4 branch directories which are as follows:Intel 82371SB PCI to USB
:Opti 82C861 PCI to USB
:USB Root Hub (this has a conflict yellow warning)
:USB Root Hub (this also has a conflict yellow warning).

So i have now come to the end of my ideas again. Please help if you have any further knowledge what it could be.
regards zena

Is this a USB 2 card by any chance. I am not sure, but I suspect that USB 2 will not work on a computer that old with Win98. It handle basic USB fine, but it may just not have the ability to handle USB 2....

If you are having conflicts in Device manager you could try setting the resources yourself depending on the OS you use.

When you open to the part that show the confilcts look down and you might see a box that will allow you to over-ride the auto settings. Just scroll up/down antil you have no conflicts (it will tell you so).

To undo anything you do just re-select auto.

Have you tried disabling the onboard USB and using just the add-in card?

In Device Manager, click on the properties for the onboard USB and then disable in this hardware porfile. Then reboot, the card should then use the resources used by the onboard USB. If that doesn't help try disabling at the BIOS level any unneeded devices (like COM ports that are not being used).

yes i have tried disabling the hardware in the device driver and in the bios, but after rebooting the computer, the mp3 player still doesn't work on this computer.
I'm not sure if it is a USB 2 or not, how do i check for this? Is it easier just to go and buy another USB port with a com port cable for the motherboard. Also can i still obtain this type of usb port somewhere? As i have never seen one?

It would say on the box if it is a USB 2 PCI card. They generally cost more, so you probably would have known when you bought it. The regular USB and USB 2 cards are both readily available if you are in the USA. Here are a few: Newegg, (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?DEPA=1&submit=Go&description=USB%2CPCI%2Ccard&searchdepa=1&page=1) but they all seem to be USB 2, so it may be harder to find a USB 1.1 card.... I am not sure it really makes a difference though, even with an older OS....

i have had another closer look at the usb port an it has usb Ver 1.04, so this answers one question.
The port is not a USB2.

Hi everybody!

I had tried to install a Firewire/USB2.0 card in a Win 98 machine and it did work. ( Now I have upgraded the OS to Win XP.)

When I installed the card for the first time there was some problem with the driver and the PC did not complete loading the Window. I changed the card to another slot and reinstalled driver: Problem solved!
