I know this subject is old I've seen the other posts but I am just so flustered with this thing. Anyway here are the specs.

- P4 3.0 Ghz
- 450 Watt power supply
- Intel D865PERLL 1(8x AGP) 5PCI, (DDR 2700,3200), 1394, 10/100, SATA,800mhz FSB.
- Western Digital 200 GB 7200RPM 8MB Buffer UmDA/100
- ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 9800 PRo 128MB DDR 8x-4x AGP
-Creative SB Audigy 2 EX
- 512 DDR PC2700

I put it all together and at first it wouldn't even power up I later found that it was because the CPU wasn't seated properly. The one of the pins got bent from the store so I got that exchanged and placed it in and it now powers up. But after it powers up the monitor screen stays black. The monitor light goes from green to orange and the screen stays black. The front panel lights for the HD stay red and all the fans everything from the cpu fan to the all the case fans run. The mother board standby light stays lit but no beep from the motherboard. So I can't tell what the problem is. I removed the CMos Battery and still doesn't boot. I was going to get the motherboard exchanged and try to assemble the thing out of the case to see if it's cuz of the tower but I dunno, it's got me confused. Help ANyone HELP!!!

It could be your memory configuration, you state your using DDR 2700 and DDR 3200 ???---try just 1 stick of the 2700 in the #1 slot and see if that changes your sequence and discription of events.

When you installed the processor [cpu] did it go in easy, like fall in or did you have to pressure it???

While you were building this unit did you take proper gounding precautions ??? wrist strap etc: static electric can take out a mobo real quick, trust me Ive done it.

Did you use thermal paste on the CPU prior to installation??

Do any of your drives show a green light before they "stay red"

This sounds like a really nice unit---hang in there you will get to the bottom of your problem.

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

Are you trying to boot barebones or with all the drives connected? If they are connected, I would try them unconnected. See if you get POST. If you do, that is a good sign and suggests that you probably have a problem that is not centered on the motherboard or CPU. If you still don't get any video, it is probably RAM or video that is the problem. If you get video, it may be something to do with a drive.

If you don't get POST, the next step would be to try outside the case with no drives, but make sure the case speaker is plugged in so you can hear if you get POST. Also, make sure you place the motherboard on a nonconductive surface like a piece of cardboard. If you still don't get POST, it is likely to be a motherboard or CPU problem, although you still can't rule video or RAM out completely. If you do get POST, it suggests that you had a short with the case and you need to find and avoid that when you reinstall it.

Let us know in detail what you have done and what you found out and we can help you along....

Paul and Budrfed thanks for your reply and here are the answers to your questions.

- there was a misunderstanding, my motherboard is capable of 2700 or 3200 ddr ram. I've got two 512 sticks of 2700 ddr ram in the memory slots.

- No, I don't have any anti-static wrist bands but I did touch a metal surface that was grounded.

- Yes I am using thermal grease I'm using Artic silver III

- I didn't really pay attention to the front panel display but I don't think any of th drives went green then red.

Budrfed,

I don't see any place for me to plug my case speaker to my mother board. It has its' own speaker built in it's a little round thing on he diagram that came with my documentation for the intel board. But as for your suggestion to build it on cardboard... I will do that and see what happens. I'll also try to boot it with only the bare bones.

Thanks you guys for replying so quickly you're lifesavers!!!!

:D

Kae... stupid computer is I guess shortin' out....

I ran it bare bones out of the case and it loads and boots up fine...

Then i go and build it into the case and the freakin' thing does the same thing again. It goes black on the screen. Note: I've only put the hard drive, power source, and gfx card in the case. Why!!!!!! Please... help me... anyone ....:(

Well, a short is metal touching metal. You need to look at any place that you could have that. One of the most likely is if you have a motherboard standoff screw in a place that doesn't have a hole or if the screw for the standoff is touching actual circuits. Check for the fist option and consider using washer on top and bottom of the screw for the second. If that doesn't do it, just look for anything else that might be touching a hot part of the motherboard.

Awesome Budfred,

Any other ideas of where it could be?

Cuz I'm going to go out and get a bunch of washers to do it.

Ok, you might want to check the kit that came with your motherboard or case first though. They usually come with a bunch of washers. Make sure they are the little cardboard or plastic ones so that they don't make the problem worse. If you do need to buy some, you should be able to buy a whole bunch for less than $1....

Otherwise, it is just a matter of trying to find any possible metal on metal contact. You can even stick a bit of nonconductive material between any suspect areas (temporarily) to see if it makes a difference.

I just looked back at your reply about the barebones test and there are 2 other things I would check. First, try it without the hard drive. Second, check the video card slot to make sure that you don't have some metal to metal connection there. That could be the short and account for the monitor blackout....

Okay well... when you mean metal to metal... what part exactly...
cuz the gfx card has a metal backing that's the little bracket I need to fit into the slot of the case. And that metal bracket is stuck to the gfx card that needs to go into my AGP slot on the Mobo.. So ... I dunno how specific you mean... Sorry... not quite pro at this yet :( please guide me.

You might have a mobo that the circuiting is to close to the screw holes and when you tighten down you make a circuit to ground--use insulated washers top and bottom of the standoff brass fittings.
The insulated washers should do the trick--make sure the back device plate [parallel port-mouse and keyboard area] is NOT touching the mobo.

The metal part of the video card that goes into the slot has to touch the case in order to fit properly, so that is not what I mean. I am not sure how sensitive the part that you connect the video cable to is though, if that is pushed up against the case, it might be able to short it. The standoffs for the motherboard are the most likely options though or just some other loose wire connection in the case....

Double check your internal connections like the POWER LED,RESET SWITCH,
the power plugs from the Power Supply--there are 2 of them.--Go over all of that--------what tpye of case and P/S do you have--if you remove your MOBO again just look for anything metal that could come in contact with the circuiting of thew MOBO

:) Thanks Budfred and Grumper,

You guys are awesome I got the dang thing to work. I just ended up placing washers on the top and bottom of the mobo where the standoff screws where touching it. Turns out all that crap was over a screw. Anyway thanks for all your guys' help.

Glad to hear all is well ---I have a question , where did you get the insulating washers--I was looking in NEWEGG.COM in general search-NG

I ordered a bunch of them from CyberGuys and you can also find them at Micro Centers if you have one in your area.
