Hello: everyone, I just starting using Winzip to restore a compressed file named= Riched20.dll I extracted ok and put it back in c:\windows\system where it belongs. I want to get rid of Winzip because it is hard to use and it took over my drop down menu's and placed itself all over the place without my knowledge! When I went to uninstall it a screen came down and one thing it said was that if i uninstall Winzip it will take all the winzip files with it. Now what i want to know, does this mean it will take my riched dll with it and then i will have to get another UNzip SERVICE to restore it again? I had to restore this dll because the w32Nimda.mm wiped it out of my pc but everything is ok now, If any one know, is it ok to get rid of winzip? Thank TOM

No it won't touch the files you used it.
it will only remove it's files .
Those used by the program..

Hi, and no-Winzip will not remove files you have unzipped and/or downloaded and installed, it will just de-associate itself with ZIP format, which just means you won't be able to open ZIP files anymore until you get another ZIP program.

Sorry to hear you dislike Winzip, personally i've found it to be the best Compression program out there, not to mention the easiest to use; leave it in the wizard mode if you're not comfortable with the command console interface. You can go into the options and have it removed or scaled down in the alt-right click menu's.

If you decide to get another ZIP program, you'll find that they will emulate Winzip's interface, so if you're not comfortable with using the Contextual menu of Winzip-you'll still find yourself at odds with the other programs.

Yes, I agree iisbob, it is definitely one of if not the best I've come across. Only other compression program I've came across that is fairly similar and provides almost the same type of compression is winRAR.. which is also very good. You could always give that a try, but is is VERY similar to the winzip interface...

Thanks alot Guys, i really appreciate the feedback. I think I will tinker around a little with Winzip maybe i did not give it a chance! But they said they would start charging a fee of 29.00 after 21 days if i continue to use it after that! I have a FRee unzip program I can go to called Camzip, and that is suppose to be real easy to use. By the way are you guys being charged for Winzip Service? TOM

They are absolutely right. If you uninstall winzip you will not lose your
files. If your looking for a good zipping utility check out winrar. Not only does it zip and unzip but you can break apart files for floppy use. Easier to use than winzip. You can also create self expanding executables.
you can find it at rarsoft.com.

good luck
p.s. it is shareware but it doesn't stop working. just an annoying nag screen.

Bummer! I guess I am dense..I only have the Aladdin program for unzipping and needed to zip something last night, so borrowed my husband's puter (under his supervision!) and went through the WinZip tutorial twice. I sure didn't find it an easy interface, and resolved to find another zipping utility..(yes, copied your link from another thread, iisbob..thanks)..so dismayed to hear that the other zipping programs use the same sort of interface.

Has anyone heard anything good or bad about this one: 7zip (http://www.7-zip.com/)? I read an article recently about encouraging those who make shareware/freeware..and I have no problem with giving them money, but don't want to pay for something I don't like. Gonna stay with Aladdin for unzipping...real easy to use.

Kay,

with WinZip you- (I) just click - "I agree">> next>>next(again) and then it opens or installs whatever I'm trying to do.

(winzip WIZARD interface).. not "classic"

(3) clicks and you're done.. always, on every machine I use it on.
