This is an older, secondary PC, but I need it to be working...
Config:
Asus A7A266 mobo (Really wanted A7M, but A7A was all I could find at the moment)
1.2GHz Athlon T-bird 266 FSB
Micron 256MB PC2700 DDR x2 (512MB total)
Enermax 431W PSU
Hercules GeForce2 Ultra
SB Live! X-Gamer
Quantum Fireball 30GB 7200 ATA/133 drive
Lite-On 48/24/48 CD-RW
Windows XP Home
This particular PC was working fine until recently, until a friend had a HDD failure on his Dell laptop.(it won't boot) We connected his 2.5" HDD to my PC via an adapter. The system could see and read the drive, and we manage to salvage some data, but for the most part, attempting to read the drive resulted in complete system hangup.
After that, problems started.
Now and then, PC would totally hang - no video signal, IDE LED on, activity LED on CD drive always on. Reset button not working. PC would turn off after holding ATX power switch for 4 seconds, but when turned on again, it would go directly into this hanging state. No beeps from attached PC speaker.
Turning PSU off, waiting a while, and turning back on would sometimes get the video signal out, make a single beep, and the system would go into CMOS, saying that system previously hung up due to bad frequency settings. Settings are as they ever were: 133 system/133 SDRAM/33 PCI.
However, after after a minute or so, while still in CMOS, I get hung up again - video goes away, and IDE activity LED steady on. Did not yet have time to do more thorough testing, but any wanna hazard a guess what's wrong? I suspect the problem is either mobo or PSU, but after great many assembled PCs I came to consider Asus and Enermax synonimous with 'quality'.
Thanks!
