I did a big exchange of hardware from one system to another recently. I'm having a lot of trouble getting the hard drive to be recognized by the bios. It occasionally gets recognized if I go to the ide auto detect...the drive is definitely good because i've taken it out and gotten it recognized/formatted in my other computer.

What it says is i/o conflict 2f8...I'm pretty new to computer building so i'm not sure what this means.

I'm gonna check the manufacturers site to double check that I have the drive jumpered correctly...but other than that i'm not sure what else to do.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Well, thanks for the google search link. Problem is I don't really know enough to filter through the 40,000 results I get. Please accept my apology if my questions inconvenience you or annoy you in any way.

On a lighter note...now I know that I can search on this page called Google for stuff.

Google is a great search engine...:)

That said, I would definitely check the jumper settings. We have had several discussions in the last couple of days about the jumpers and the cables. Paleo Pete was saying that it is necessary to jumper many current drives as Cable Select. You can check out his comments here: Pete... 2F8 is the numeric (Hexadecimal) I/O (Input/Output) address the computer uses to locate COM port 2. That's a physical COMmunications port built into the motherboard. The problem is most likely you also have a modem that sets itself as a virtual COM port that also uses I/O address 2F8...COM2...

The cure for this is in BIOS. Disable serial port 2 which is usually set at 2F8 and IRQ3 by default. (COM 1 will be 3F8 and IRQ 4.) That lets the modem's virtual COM port work without causing a conflict, The conflict is due to the fact that the computer can only have and use ONE COM2 at the 2F8 address...it currently has TWO, and that won't work...

The hard drive problem is a bit more tricky, we'll need some more information to be able to figure that one out. Let us know some more specific info, how many drives are attached, what sizes, what IDE channels they are plugged into, what their jumper settings are and whether it's 40 or 80 conductor cable. Include CD ROM drive(s). My guess is jumper settings.

Thanks guys. I'll try your solution to the i/o conflict. The hard-drive problem I managed to work out by installing the hard drive in a computer with Windows already installed. From there I formatted the drive to fat 32 and deleted the partition...for some reason that helped the other computer recognize the full drive space and i've got it up and running now.

I don't know what happened...the fix was probably something I did inadvertently and not the reformat...

Thanks again.
