View Full Version : Radeon 9000 Pro - just need bubbling water

I recently bought a Radeon 9000 Pro 128MB graphics card - it was the only card that would (a) work in my old PC and (b) was available from suppliers. It's a Sapphire board. Yesterday the fan on the card started making a noise rather like a fish tank pump, only without the soothing bubbling :D. It's driving me nuts. I've heard that some graphics cards are noisy, so my question is "Is the card meant to make that kind of noise or should I send it back and hope the replacement is better?" One other thing - the board is upside-down in my PC (i.e. the fan points down not up). Would this have anything to do with the noise level? I guess I'm stuffed if so :(
Thanks
John
It's possible that the fan's design and its orientation(facing the bottom of the case) makes it noisy. But it may also be a defective fan.
Best to RMA it for a replacement to make sure.

Most graphics cards (maybe all) with fans will point downward in a tower case, this is normal.... Before you RMA the card, you might check to see if the fan just needs to be tightened a bit onto its mount...

Thanks. I'll try tightening the fan and will send the board back if that doesn't work.

One other thing :) Occasionally the text mouse pointer (i.e. the I bar) will turn red with a corrupted cyan block attached to it. I've tried various text/mouse related settings but the problem still occurs. I tried upgrading to the latest Catalyst drivers but that hasn't fixed it. It's only the text pointer - arrows, hands, egg timer, etc. are all fine. Any ideas? I've searched the web and can't find anything documented. It comes and goes randomly. Operating system is Windows 98 SE.
Thanks
John
