I onli have 1 slot left on my motherboard:mad:
i will like to put a kingston 512 in with the same speed(pc2100)
is it possible?
will there be any errors:confused:
if i'm not wrong my mobo is i845G:confused:
plz help...

You shouldn't have any problems mixing brand names of RAM, especially if you run them both at the same speed (133MHz in this case). A dual-channel memory chipset would have problems with the different sizes, but you don't need to worry about that, either.

My only advice would be to put the 512MB stick in the first RAM slot (ie where the Micron 256MB stick is now) and move your original stick of RAM to the second slot. This is more precautionary than anything but it never hurts.

If you do get errors, simply tone down the RAM timings in the BIOS.

One more thing... what OS are you running? You're looking at a total of 768MB of RAM, which older versions of Windows (95, 98, ME) don't like. You do have XP or 2k, right?

erm...what do u mean run them at 133mhz coz i thought pc2100 runs at 266mhz?
is it the chipset that enables dual channel?is my chipset dual channeled?
or is it the ram:confused:
im kindna confuse rite now and hope for replies..

The RAM apparently runs at 133mhz, but it is doubled by the chipset.

Your motherboard determines whether you can use dual channel or not and it should say in your motherboard manual. You can also look up the motherboard on the web if you don't have the manual.

so r u saying that pc2100 runs at 133mhz
and not at 266mhz
but y at shops thay put up 266mhz?

It is a little confusing. The actual speed is 133, but it is doubled so it effectively runs at 266. This site will give you a bit more info on it: DDR (http://www.compreunpc.com/faq.asp) ...

DDR=Double Data Rate - it doubles the real speed of the chip to produce the advertised speed....

Your chipset is the i845G, which isn't dual-channel DDR capable. Sorry for confusing you on that, I shouldn't have mentioned it.

DDR RAM (in this case PC2100) transfers data at a certain clock rate - 133MHz for PC2100. But DDR RAM can transfer two bits each clock cycle. The speed is still 133MHz but since it pushes twice as much data it's referred to as running at 266MHz effectively (key word there). I don't know why they call it that, maybe to simplify things, which it does I guess because most people don't know about it. Of course, it's not really important to know in order to build a working computer so I don't know why I'm rambling on about it.

The only really important thing to know about DDR RAM is the "PCxxxx" rating, like "PC2100", so you can match it to the RAM you have. As long as you go by that rule, you won't have any RAM problems. :D

erm...but when i go in the BIOS setup  there is a part in which it display the type of memory module found, currently i display 256mb pc2100 ddr:( if i do as u say it will display 512mb pc2100 ddr and the second slot will be the 1 wif micron.
so will these coz errors:confused:

I am not sure what you are asking. If you install the 512, it will simply say 512 for the first one and 256 for the second. Is this what you mean???

wad i mean was :(
first column-wad type of ram used
2nd column-ram at slot 1
3rd column-ram at slot 2

so if i have different ram what will display at first column and will there be any errors?

I'm not sure what you mean by "different RAM". If they're both PC2100, they're the same type of RAM. One is 256MB and one is 512MB but this won't cause any errors. You don't need to install the same size RAM sticks with your chipset.

The Micron vs Kingston thing doesn't matter, either. It's like buying a hammer - brand name doesn't matter because they both do the same thing. Just like the PC2100 label - it says the RAM will work at the PC2100 spec. That said, it's best to buy brand name RAM, but Micron and Kingston are both very good RAM names so you won't have any problems.

My only advice would be to put the 512MB stick in the first RAM slot

For clarification and fufure reference...

The OS looks for RAM in the first memory slot then the second, etc. With 512MB in the first slot it will often not have to look for more memory at all, and will in any case use that before it looks for more elsewhere, while 256MB in that slot will almost always cause the OS (especially XP, being the memory hog it is) to go looking for more lots sooner.

It's not much, but putting the larger chip in Slot 1 gives the OS more memory to deal with initially, and a slight performance increase as well, since it can use all of it before it needs to stop and find more. But remember, we're only talking tiny time frames here...a few milliseconds at best.
