Hi:Problem this time around running xp with external US Robotics modem v90.I moved my computer that was working fine to my house from work and now I get no dial tone when trying to connect to the internet.
I checked device mgr reinstalled modem.
When modem trys to connect I get the sch,sch sound but will not dial out.
I tried my other computer on the same jack works fine.
The acer computer worked fine at work no problem,Any help would be greatly appreciated.:o
Try a new cable beteween the modem and the jack...also make 100% sure that it is plugged into the Line not Phone jack on the modem.

Tks mjc for reply!
I just bought the cable brand new 2 weeks ago so I now it"s working fine, also I double checked to make sure phone wire plugged into the line.I plugged a phone in the phone jack on the modem and that works,it seems as if my modem will not dial out anymore.

I just bought the cable brand new 2 weeks ago so I now it"s working fineIf you used this cable to connect the "other" computer successfully...it's probably good...
Otherwise, remember that many electronic parts shipped "new" have been DOA (New, and working, are not necessarily dependent terms!) :(
You might want to have a look at Control Panel>Modems>Properties>Diagnostics...highlight and try More Info...

Have seen this three times in different households in the last month and each time it was a case of either fiddling with the telephone cable/contacts or getting a new cable. Sometimes reversing the cable works - perhaps because just one of the sockets isn't making a good enough connection with its counterpart.

Be sure it is plugged into the correct com port!!!!!!
Start-->settings-->Control Panel-->Modems--> Select modem--> Diagnostics--> Mighlight com port and clcik on more info. It will test the modem and see it it responds to AT commands.
Also try Hyperterminal and see if you get a dial tone
at+enter should say OK
ATTD+enter shoud get dial tone
ATTD+phone# should get a dial out

Are you sure that the dial-up number is the same. Like a one or nine needed at work that is not needed from home.

A possible workaround for this problem is to open >control panel>system> modem> properties, and uncheck the box "wait for dial tone before dialling".
A bit of a kludge, but it works!
