Greetings.
I am building a new system myself and totally new at this so please bear with me.
I ordered a Athlon 1.4 chip. On this chip it has four little foam feet. Am I suppose to remove them before installing? Reason I ask is because from what pictures I’ve seen, they don’t have them on.
Also, how can I tell if the FSB is 266 or 200? I looked at the chip and can’t tell.
The system I’m building consists of:
Athlon 1.4/266
ECS K7S5A motherboard
(2) PC2100 DDR 256MB Micron
PNY Verto GeForce 3 video card
Maxtor 40GB ATA100/7200 hard drive
(2) CD’s players. One of which will be a recorder.
Sound Blaster Live
FuturePower Ace ATX 400W power supply (not sure if Athlon approved, but 400W will be good?)
Will I foresee any problems putting this system together?
One last things. I was also thinking of installing another fan inside the case. Should this fan be set as an exhaust or intake?
Any advice will be greatly welcomed.
Thank you. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Welcome JOHN!
Yes the 1.4 is 266FSB, if the processer is over the 1.2 it is automically a 266 fsb and no do not remove the rubber fittings on the processer , this is made so the heatsink fan can set evenly with the processer. Yes adding more fans will be a must get 2 case fans preferably 80mm sunons.THe 1st case fan should be in front sucking in air and the back fan should be blowing out.No make sure to get a heatsink fan also. THats a nice rig you got coming i wish i could build it!!!

Hi John0904..... Yes indeed Big Fellow the AMD 1.4 can be 200 or 266. As well as the 1.3 model.
Look at the chip-die itself very closely. There will be three row's of letters and #'s. On the TOP row... The last letter will either be the letter B or the letter C.
B = 200.
C = 266.
Not meaning to step on any toes.
Luck.

Doh! I already inserted the CPU and the heatsink.
Is there software that will tell me the FSB?
Everything went smooth and just a couple of problems.
1. When I do a lot of deleting of files, the computer hangs for a few minutes and anything afterwards it has long pauses just opening programs.
Only does this if I start deleting files.
Only thing that will correct this is to restart again.
2. When I turn off the power, the computer won't boot. It keeps searching for devices. I have to wait about 3-5 minutes before I can turn on the power.
Any idea about those problems?
Other than that, it runs great.
Thanks for any advice you can provide. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Just looking for a few answers. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
John.
Your file access problem may be caused by the chipset drivers
1st check the chipset drivers.
Make sure you have the latest for that M/B and chipset.
M/B data http://www.ecs.com.tw/products/products.htm
Bios and driver down load Data http://www.ecs.com.tw/download/download.htm
You should have the latest drivers installed.
If not you will be using the default windows drivers.
They are unreliable and can cause major problems.
This may also be part of the endless search for drivers and files during boot up

Hey,
Go to the site below to download WCUPID30d. It's a little software program that will tell you everything you wanted to know about your CPU and chipset.

Rick,
That worked like a charm! Thanks!
PC booted up fine from a complete shutdown.
Haven't deleted any files yet. Have none to delete. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
BigBlue66,
I downloaded that file and ran it.
Says my bus system is at 265.56 (close enough to 266)
I'm guessing that is my FSB.
Thanks to you too. That is a nice program.

I bought this board myself sometime ago after it first premiered, been highly impressed with it so far-i suggest however that you update it to the newest BIOS, this solved saome of the niggling little problems i had with it.
