View Full Version : My Athlon XP 2200+ have 85 c temperature
:( HI ALL!
3 days ago i bought mobo- K7VTA3 Elitgroup;
cpu- AMD AthlonXP 2200+ and
cooler-Coolermaster HHC-001 6500 rpm,copper base.
ansambled it with other components
and start enjoing new fast sistem.
but as i looked in bios - system health section,
found cpu temperature is 77 c and after
5h of working, i chack it again ,it was 85 c.
i know that this is critical temperature
for CPU,but there are no sighns of some problem.
i have System stability, witout rebooting or crashing.
I suspected that something is not right with the
heatsink and chaked it fundamentally,but
nothing suspishious.
and now have idea that bios is layng.
i even cheked temperatur manually ,touching heatsink.
it was not so heat.
what can i do? what is problem
and please give me a linck to
temperature monitoring softwere.if you know
some.
thanks.

First, are you sure the BIOS isn't giving you the temperatures in Fahrenheit???
I am afraid that if the BIOS is really reading it wrong you are probably out of luck since monitoring software will probably do the same. That said, you can try MBM5.... (http://mbm.livewiredev.com/)
no,not F , but C.
Current system temp 42 C
Current CPU temp 80 C
CPU fan speed 7031 RPM  80 C

Is that with MBM5 or with the BIOS readings. If it is an accurate temp, you are probably damaging your CPU and you need to stop using it until you figure out what is wrong. There are a number of things that can make a CPU overheat including the heatsink not being installed properly, the heatsink being cupped or the thermal pad/compound not being on there properly.
You could obtain a temperature sensor and install it, but usually the built in sensor is more accurate. If it is a bad sensor, it might be a good idea to return the CPU if you can....

Prevet (Hello)
85°C seems kind of high.
What heat paste are you using between the CPU and heatsink?
I would investigate the heat transfer paste eventually.
Also, if the heatsink is not centered somewhat on the CPU it could cause high temperatures as well.
Having proper ventilation(in/out) helps a lot too.
hi Budfred.thanks for MBM5
It gave me the same temperature 80 c.
you told me about heatsink and i turn in on another direection
.becos the cpu platform wos not in the senter of heatsink.
and then working temperature became 53 c.
thank you again ,you helpd me to survive my cpu.it costs 76$.
but naw i worry about cpu and mobo together.cos 4 day working
on 75-85 c temperatur may damage something that i would see in
future.you told me:If it is an accurate temp, you are probably damaging your CPU :(
they gave me cpu without warranty.
John0904,
i have heat paste :silicone compound SIL.MORE TAIWAN.
Your diagnos :
Also, if the heatsink is not centered somewhat on the CPU it could cause high temperatures as well.
was exact.you help me too survive cpu.lot of thanks.
it was not only centerd but i think there was small angle
between cpu and heatsink.;) :(

Glad to hear you got it fixed. You might benefit from reading more about cooling though. That is still a little on the high side and there are a number of things you can do to get the temps down. The main thing is that you can lap the heatsink. This means polishing the bottom of the heatsink where it meets the CPU to get it absolutely flat. This allows it to make better contact with the CPU and to cool it a few degrees better. Also, make sure the thermal compound is placed properly and, if you can find it, Arctic Silver is probably your best bet. The air flow through the case is important too, but you probably are ok there since you case temps were lower to begin with....
