my friends board which is the abit 865PE always beeps when playing games or watching movies. While playing games, it beeps more often than watching movies. Other than that, it seldom beeps but it still does in a very long time. It's always just a single beep. And random beep. Don't know when it will come. Nothing wrong with startup or anything. Just the beeps while using the pc. Which hardware is causing this beeps as i can't hear where it's coming from. What can i do to identify where the sound comes from? Just helping him out. Annoying beeps!!

The beep is almost certainly coming from the case speaker and you do not want to disable it since it could be important if you need to do troubleshooting later. I am guessing the beep means that the system doesn't like something the computer is doing and it is a warning, but it isn't necessarily. In Control Panel he will find an option to configure sounds that are used by the system, such as the Windoze startup sound and sounds when windows are expanded or shrunken. He can probably figure out what the beep is for there and will have the option to disable it.

On the other hand, it could be beeping to indicate a hardware problem, such as an overheating CPU. If this is the case, it would be a really good idea to pay attention to it....

Just to throw in that it could also be the graphics card over heating too.

Also, considering the new chipset, it could be that the BIOS is set to beep when something unusual happens, such as a temp threshold or a fan speed indicator. Go through his BIOS and see if there's any warnings enabled.

I had a similar problem about a year and a half ago when I set my video card's software to warn me when the temp got too high. It got too high at various times but was unnecessary because when the temp got too high, the fan on the video card would speed up to provide more cooling! I ended up being annoyed and turned the thing off because it didn't provide any useful warning that didn't get automatically taken care of! Grrr.
