View Full Version : cannot delete IE shortcut

If I try deleting, moving or renaming the shortcut I get these messages:
This Internet shortcut cannot be opened because failed to run
Cannot delete file: Windows is unable to find the file. This item might have already been deleted or moved. Press F5 to refresh the view of this folder.
I tried reinstalling IE, deleting the shortcut in Windows favorites folder, used the windows explorer and removed IE shortcut from File Types and then reinstalled windows, "repaired" IE, all to no avail.
The shortcut is called CARNet_vorilte...
_ and l stand for foreign (Croatian) letters.
When I get into properties the shortcut only has the General tab and no Web document tab.
Software: Windows ME, IE6.
Also, I am unable to delete the folder of a program I uninstalled recently. I reinstalled it and uninstalled it again but it is still there. It is full of invalid shortcuts.
It might not be a biggie but it'S ANNOYING especially the IE shortcut 'cause it's right there in my face, defying me. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Thanks for any help

Hi Stipan,
Before the suggestions begin can you give your system a scan with an Anti Virus Program or confirm that you have already done so.

Try going to Explorer (NOT IE) and find the Windows folder, in the Windows folder there should be a Favorites folder, and try to delete it there...also if you are in the folder or it is open, especially if it had and pictures in it and you have both preview and webview turned on it will be very difficult to delete...so try deleting it in Explorer by just highlighting it and right clicking, hold down the shift button and select delete. If that doesn't work try turning off preview then try again to delete it.

Actually, Sophos was constantly on. Just today I installed the newest version.

Stipan,
Go through what MJC said again, but try using the Edit/Cut and then pasting it into the recycle bin.

Or If you don’t mind using DOS commands.
Reboot/shutdown and use the boot into MS_DOS mode
Then at the command prompt “c:\windows”
Type the following command without the “” marks
“cd favori~1" this will put you in the Favorites folder (Note space between the CD and the first letter F)
.
You should then be able to delete the URL that is giving you the hassle.
The Icon may also be stored in the Desktop folder.
C:\windows\desktop
Reach this folder using the command “cd\windows\desktop” from any other folder.
(Note the \ and NO space after cd in that command)
Make sure you know the name of the icon/url before you enter dos so you can delete the correct one.
The Icons/urls will display in the dos 8.3 file name method. (filename.ext) (CARNet~1.url)
you can see all the files and folder names in the favorites folder using the DIR command.
To list all the files staring with carnet use “DIR car*” again without the “”
If you are unable to delete it because of write protection just use attrib to remove the write protection” attrib -r carnet~1.url” then use the delete command again on the file
“delete carnet~1.url”
After you delete what you want out of the folder Just press CTRL ALT DEL all at once and the system will reboot and then let it start as normal.
The Icon and url should be gone.

Thank you, but I'm afraid it didn't help.
Cannot delete file: Windows is unable to find the file...
I went to the web page again, added it to favorites and tried to overwrite the old shortcut. The shortcut now works BUT in the Windows favorites folder I have duplicate shortcuts. If I try to delete these I get the old shortcut which, if you go to properties, has only the general tab.

Well, I think we are getting somewhere. I am using Windows ME and I'm not sure how to boot into MS DOS mode. Instead I went into accessories and MS-DOS Prompt.
Cd favori~1 worked
However DIR car didn't
Plain DIR did
I got a list of items. The one that I need to delete is:
CARNET~1 URL 150 13/09/01 2:38 CARNet_vori_te Dubrovnik.url Dubrovnik.url
“delete carnet~1.url” and attrib -r carnet~1.url” didn’t work. I received messages as file not found and parameter value not allowed.

NO DOS IN ME, only a simple DOS-prompt window. Most of the good stuff about DOS won't work here. Sorry http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

I did it! I did it!
Um, I basically reinstalled Windows over the existing copy. I also played around the favorites folder with cut, copy and paste but I don't think that did it because now I was also able to delete the residues of a program that didn't uninstall correctly (a folder with a few invalid shortcuts). I am so proud! My Internet Explorer is bootiful again. Sniff.

Thanks for all the help all of you guys. I think this is better than going into MS-DOS as I was able to resolve two problems and possibly prevented future occurrences.
Stipan
Create a DOS boot disk. ( Floppy)
Put it into the floppy drive.
Set your system to look for and boot off the floppy first. ( Normally controlled in Bios)
Boot off the floppy .
At the A:\ prompt type c: and enter then CD\windows
and follow the above post ..
To find all the copies of the file. Before you reboot into dos
Use the FIND in the start menu. Using CARNET for search
Make a note of all the copies of the carnet~1.url with their full path.
Remember how Windows displays long path/file names and DOS displays them are different.
If you kow someone with Win98 ask them to make a DOS boot disk for you and use that http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
