I have been trying to get my USB optical mouse to work and so far no joy, my M/B (baby AT) has a 8 pin USB connector, is this normal, all the usb cable's i have seen so far are 10 pin female. Can i source a 8 pin female. Is there any other way to hook up a USB connector ie from IDE, Comm port etc?

Hi there,

Give this site a look-see. http://www.allelec.com/CAB131.htm

You can buy a usb port that plugs into your pci slot on your motherboard.

Have a great day! Don't forget to help an elderly person when needed.

Hi Tats i too went thru this pinout mobo usb hell. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I have an old epox68lxr board that has 16 pins, and the epox site only listed it as 10!

Needless to say i spent several hours trying to figure out the right combo. There are four types of connections; A,B,C,D, and depending on your board it'l go + to - on both sides, or + to - on one side and - to + on the opposite. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Here is a site with some helpful info{ USB pinout (http://www.usbman.com/Guides/BelkinMotherboard_cable_assembly.htm) } , you may have to try several differrent combos to get the one that works for your board. I had to take a 5 pin USB cable and remove one of the grounds to get mine to work, ( epox said it was a 2x5, when it turned out to be a 2x8 ).

Tats

Same your self some hassle.
Get the usb connector for your specific Mother board.
Especially if it is an Asus Mother Board
That M/B’s usb plug/card is a 9 pin connector and the card also has additional circuitry on it

Pay very close attention to the pin-out diagram, and I even recommend testing with a multimeter before using the secondary USB header with a "generic" cable assembly. The reason I say this: my Abit KT7 has a truly b*stard pin configuration; I assumed I knew what I was doing and plugged in a USB mouse. The mouse got very stinky very fast; I half expected to see flames come out of it. Although it smells a little, the Logitech still works!

If a person can't get the specific cable assembly for their 8-pin motherboard header: a dual 1x5 connector assembly is versatile, but you need to know the header's layout of signal/return/voltage/ground.
