A fax-modem and appropriate software.

Thanks pave_spectre. Do you have to have a spacial service for that? Or can I just install the fax-modem, plug in the phone line and start sending faxes.

Usually I think you can just send them straight over the phone line, with the fax/modem acting just like a regular fax machine.

Do you have a scanner??

Are you on dial up or broadband?
There is fax software you can install that runs on the PC such as Winfax Pro, which lets you send and receive faxes through your regular modem.
There are also services that you can get to do fax.

ixl had a post about it a few weeks ago?

Yes, I have a scanner and I'm on broadband. This inquiry is really not for me. They have an "HP psc 950 all-in-one" (http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/product.jhtml?lc=en&pagetype=hppsc950pr34580&cc=us) but wanted to be able to send faxes from their computer.
There are also services that you can get to do fax. But will they need that service to send a fax, if they have a fax moden installed? They have broadband.

Winfax allows the user to send jobs via a fax driver on a dialup modem, if they still have one in the PC they can plug it in and use it for faxing. I have done it with mine while running DSL, of course it ties up a phone line.

Also most Fax software adds a "virtual" printer to allow you to send a fax directly from most applications.

Thanks guys. They have a cable modem. So this is my understanding; I install a fax modem, plug in the phone line, install the software (or vice versa, depending on manufacture installation procedures) and then I'm good to go. Of course I'm still wondering about something here. How do I obtain a fax number?

Yep. that's all you need to do, but you don't need a fax number. The number of the line you connect to becomes your fax number as well.

Before buying a new fax modem, check out any old 28 or36k modems you have. Fax is a slower speed than internet access, and you can use a slower modem if it is fax capable.

There is no need to buy special software.

If your friend has WIn98 (or can get his/her hands on a 98 disk) he/she can install MS fax which is part of 98. I have heard that it can also be installed OK onto XP.
