Clean istall of Win98.

When the first desktop appears the usual Windows sounds play, and I can play CD's and hear without problems.

Re-boot the computer and I get no sound whatsoever. No errors/conflicts in device manager. When I check the multy media properties everything is fine and shows working order.

In safe mode there are no Ghost drivers. I have tried re-installing the sound drivers to no avail. Even after re-installing these I get no sound.

To get sound back I have to re-insert the Ghost image (I make Ghost image at every stage of installation)

Sound card in good working order, speakers in good working order as well and connected correctly, as indicated by sound in the first desktop, and have also tried in different PCI slots.

No error messages recieved

Reinstall Windows without making any Ghost images, and see if that works.

A ghost image is made from within DOS, and does not affect Win OS.

Finish install and then boot into DOS (either through start button or pressing f8)

When I re-insert the initial Ghost image I get my sound back and can keep it until I re-boot. So not Ghost at fault.

If I attached the Bootlog could someone look at it for me? I have tried but before I could begin to understand it I would have to do a lot of editing so that I could decipher the words.

Anybody any idea? Still cannot get sound unless I re-insert the original ghost image.

Have you checked the Volume Controls to see if something is getting muted by default??

Yes, I have checked and nothing is set to mute. Initial install bootup and sound there. Reststart/closedown sound dissapears.

Clean istall of Win98. Is there 'N' 'E' body that can tell?

OEM?

Are you referring to ALL sounds, from the opening dynamic 'Windows' crescendo or trying to play CD's? Or mpegs? ...

What do Volume Controls and Audio Properties give for options? Howabout Device Manager?

ErnieK

Yes ALL sounds.

At initial(first boot where welcome screen show) boot all sounds are there, including musc from CD drive. Re-boot/turn off and ALL sound is lost until I re-insert the ghost image once more and patern is repeated.

No errors off any kinds in device manager either before or after reboot.

Volume control show Default and Tridwave (name off my Trust sound card) Have tried both. No difference.

Have tried safe mode - no ghost drivers. Uninstalled drivers frome safe mode and let windows refinf again. No difference. Have removed (physically) the card and re-inserted. No difference

System file checker shows all files are OK.

Is the sound coming from external speakers or the PC nternal speakers.

It may be the initial is set to use the internal speakers and once the sound card drivers are installed, it bypasses the internal speakers and attempts to use the external speakers connected to the sound card

Did you formatting and reinstalling?

ErnieK

Yes

Fdisked, remade primary partition - then formated and did a full clean install.

Try a different sound card.

I am trying to get my hands on one at the moment. But the fact that at initial boot of windows indicates to me that the installed one is working Ok.

Ernie,

I think you have an IRQ problem, probably a failure to reassign an IRQ when you reboot.

Unfortunately, I have no idea of how to fix this in bios although I am sure someone in this forum does. Probably just using a different card will solve the problem, and the card you have may work well in some other machine.

The closest I could find to your problem was this. It may not apply at all though. I think it was for a similar problem with a LAN card:

Here's a guide to IRQ steering:

A possible resort might be to attempt a barebones boot...strip things back to the basics leaving out any PCI cards except for the sound...

Reload Windows sans other devices...

Or, you might want to try the sound card in a different slot...

On my ASUS A7V133 the IRQ Allocation Table shows that some IRQs are "hardwired" to specific slots which are then forced to share...

For example, my AGP is hardwired to PCI slot 1. With Video being an absolute resource hog, one would do well to avoid any device in slot 1...

I will check to see which IRQ it is using, even though there is no conflicts, and if possible manually re-assign or move to another PCI slot.

Whyzman
If the above does not work I will do as you suggest.

You still have not told us about the speakers.

Also, have you tried a different slot??

When you go into device manager view device by coonection and yoy can see shared IRQ's

When turned on the computer gives the usual post beep from the built in speaker. The sound speakers are in good order as I have tried them on another (this one) computer.

You wouldn't happen to have a headset plugged in the front knocking the output to the speakers out of play...??? Oops, reread the opening post Ernie and see it works well until the reboot...

I'm thinking you might want to try MsConfig and shut down all but necessary startup stuff...see if the reboot which will enact the shutdown of the startup progs will allow sound...

I will try your suggestion before I start to pull it apart. That is the one thing I never thought of. Plus I will make sure that the walls are lined with padding for when I eventually throw the thing of the wall. :D

Success!

I decided to cross check the IRQ's (even thought here was no conflicts) and memory addresses.

PCI Legacy Audio was showing a Dir Mem address of 00 so I manually changed this to 1. Rebooted and walla sound there upon reboot. Have rebooted 12 times since then and sound now consistant.

Thanks guys for pointing me in the right direction. ;)

You cannot see my face for the glint of teeth. :D :D :D

It turned out to be a lucky shot that fixed it. They do say the devil looks after his own, or is it that I am now verging on the GURU class?

Ps. I am now looking for instructions on how to stop strutting about :D :D

Ps. I am now looking for instructions on how to stop strutting about

Thats easy.
Find a low table or set of steps
Close eyes
Strut forward

Dont blame me when it results in injury.:D
