For some strange reason, my 1999 Abit BE6 motherboard won't retain my settings in the BIOS. I have been running at 400MHz the past few years but suddenly it has reverted back to the default of 266MHz. I have gone into SoftMenu II and changed it but while all teh other settings are changed, the CPU setting keeps staying at 266MHz. Sometimes I get the "CPU is unworkable or has been changed" error message "Press Delete or F1" but not all the time. I really am stumped this time, really...

I'm getting the message "CPU is unworkable or has been changed." with every setting I try on my Abit motherboard. What's wrong?
The problem is that Abit (by reasons unknown to us) has included an option in their Soft Menu called "Speed Error Hold". This option halts the system, if the speed is not set at default. This means that if you intent to overclock your CPU, you should disable this option. In short, set "Speed Error Hold" to "Disabled" and it should work?? did you try to over clock this? you might need Bios upgrade? or flash? I'm sure some one has a good idea I believe it's a little over my head.
try setting the jumpers on the board maually you got the mobo's maual, you could try a new chip.Do you remember what the core voltage was before and after?

Are you getting other errors like checksum, or the drives loosing configuration, or other loss to Setup configurations?
If you can answer yes to one or more of the above questions I'd say it is time to give a new CMOS battery a shot.....especially if you had it set and ran at that speed for quite some time.
