I have a Hewlett Packard....about 1 year old. I've been having freezing problems since I got it. I called HP tech about 3 times and it helped a little, but still didn't solve the prob. Now the warranty has expired (I know....my fault) and I just can't take it anymore! Either I get help from here, or I'll have to take it to a costly repair shop. My system resources are about 87% on reboot. It dosen't matter what I'm doing....all of a sudden, I'll freeze. I can't cont, alt, delete. I have to do a hard restart. This happens while I'm on the internet....or printing, or restarting, or actually anything. When I restart, I cont, alt, delete to shut down anything I don't need..... some things say the program is busy, etc. I can't remember which ones. but I think this has something to do with it....I don't know. PLEASE help me. Thanks!

Do you have win 98, if so start/run and type msconfig
Then go to the startup tab, and uncheck things that you dont use if your unsure of what some of the programs are dont uncheck them.
Also run your antivirus software to figure out you might have a virus.
If you still are having problems , then its a hardware problem, and i would take it to the shop. Youll save a lot of hardship if you just take it to the shop. But check the virus and uncheck some programs in msconfig, then if that dont help.Shop

Hi Melanie, Welcome to the Forum

Sorry to hear about your troubles, computing should be fun.

Can you post some system specs and list the programs you have running in the background.

The more info that you give, the more chance there is of getting to the bottom of the problem.

Okay, what model Pavilion do you have?

Have you gone to HP and downloaded the latest updates and drivers?

Do you ever really use the internet features of your keyboard and can you do without the mute and volume controls that are on it?

Have you tried updating the bios?

Don't go the BIOS route quite yet...but keep it in the back of your mind. I had had similar problems with my Pavilion and solved them by uninstalling the HP internet keyboard and going to a standard keyybaord.

The software to make that thing work is a resource hog...especially the original version from about a year or two ago. If yoou end the keyboard manager program I bet you'll see about a 6% increase on the resources. There are three programs for the keyboard one is the osd (on screen display) and that one seems to cause the most problems, because the older version is a 16 bit program trying to run with two 32 bit programs...unless of course you have the USB keyboard and mouse...then there is another set of problems with it (one of the problems is that both versions of the software are loaded...the USB and nonUSB).

But in general if you don't need thse "convenience" keys I think the best thing to do would be to use a standard keyboard.
