Hello!
I have an older PC which I am trying to connect with a Hayes modem 56k, 5674US model/driver. Set for com port 2. Mouse is on com port 1.
This computer was on a network, and now I want it set for dial-up.
Error message received at dial-up:
Failed to connect to remote computer, not detect modem, it may be in use, turned off or not installed properly.
-------
Problem:
My hubby was going to set this pc up, but now is stalling - he did say because the PC was on the network, he would need to go into the case to open port 2.
I have opened the case, and don't see anything connected at com port 2,
but also don't see what should be connected.
I have gone through each step for diagnostics, and there are no
device conflicts, and the modem is working, and the driver is installed.
Hoping one of you might give me details about what to look for, and how I can get this PC to diap-up.
thanks so much!
- Katherine
Is COM(serial port) 2 enabled in BIOS?
If so, does it show up in Device Manager under 'Ports'?
Which network components are shown as installed in Control Panel/Network/Configuration?
Did you install your dialup ISP's software?
Hi Katherine, and welcome to The PC Guide forums.
Would you please do me a favor and turn off your e-mail auto-reply, or set it so it does not respond to notifications from the forums. All those auto-replies end up in my inbox. Thanks.

Which OS please? And is this an internal or external modem? Finally, can you confirm that there is no confusion between where the Tel Line plugs in and where the Network cables plugged in?

1) I turned the auto-responder off for my email.
Thanks for the heads-up on this.
2) Is COM(serial port) 2 enabled in BIOS?
Yes.
If so, does it show up in Device Manager under 'Ports'?
Yes.
Which network components are shown as installed in Control Panel/Network/Configuration?
Client for MS Networks
Dialup Adapter
Net BEUI
TCP/IP
Intel 92595 Based Ethernet
IPX/SPX-Comp Protocol Dialup Adapter
IPX/SPX Comp Protocol Intel 82895 Based Ethernet
Net BEUI Dialup Adapter
Did you install your dialup ISP's software?
No software is required. Dialup properties are set up
appropriately. I have Qwest as my ISP.
Which OS?
WIN 95
Internal or external modem?
External
Finally, can you confirm that there is no confusion between where the Tel Line plugs in and where the Network cables plugged in?
No confusion. Modem is connected correctly and is a working
modem.
To clarify: I used my HP PC at this location with the dial-up,
so I know the modem works fine.
I took my HP home, and am switching it out for the older PC,
which we are discussing here. The old computer was on DSL & a network,
and I am trying to get it to work with the external modem, and it won't
be on a network.
Thank you for your feedback!

Since the computer is no longer on a LAN(local area network), then remove the following from Network/Configuration, and see if that helps:
Net BEUI
IPX/SPX-Comp Protocol Dialup Adapter
IPX/SPX Comp Protocol Intel 82895 Based Ethernet
Net BEUI Dialup Adapter
If that does not work, then also remove 'Intel 92595 Based Ethernet'.

Hello,
I did what you stated, and the system is not detecting the
modem.
I will most likely have to take the case in to a tech shop.
Appreciate all your help - take care!

Do you just have one single D15 Serial Port on the outside of the computer. If there is only one then you are not (in my experience) going to find one on the inside (where you would normally insert a PCI or ISA modem - depending on the age of the motherboard).
So if only one, then can you get a PS/2 mouse and use the single connector for your external modem.
Maybe try without the mouse in anycase, if you know how to navigate using the keyboard, and from Control Panel use the Add New Hardware. The modem should be attached and powered up and see if the wizard can detect it.
Perhaps boot into safe mode and remove any refernces to modems in Add/Remove Programs, Control Panel or Device Manager before trying to reinstall the modem into a single serial port.
