View Full Version : win 95 stalls at shutdown

PLease help. I installed a NETGEAR FA311 NIC on my Win 95 machine and also installed the Client services and File and Print Sharing services. Since then, whenever I click on Shutdown, it just hangs on the "One Moment While Your System Shutsdown" screen. The network card seems to be working fine. What did I do and how do I fix it. First just shut down your cpu and boot up in about 3 minutes, then try to shut down, see if that works. Sounds like the driver for the netgear is interfering on your shutdown. Then if that doesnt work, uninstall the netgear, take card out(shut pc down) then boot up again. If it shut downs then you know its the netgear causing problems,If so go to netgear online site and find any issues about shutdown problems.Usually issues like this will be under support, on netgear site.

Thanks diurnal. I've shut it down a couple of times by just holding in the power button. I know thats bad but its the only way to turn it off. So, like you said, I'm gonna remove the card and un-install the driver and see if it then shutsdown properly. Also, could it be caused by installing the Client or File and Print services? I'll let you know how it goes. I'm at work so I'll try when I get home. Thanks for the response!

Before taking out the card, because its a pain in the ass with the box I have, I removed the Client service and the File and Print service and it then shutdown properly. As soon as I put them back on it hung again. Does that mean that its not the card. Know of any common problems with these services? What is going on? I also have this crazy fishtank screensaver, could that have anything to do with this? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

There is the possibilty that the software is not properly interpretting the shutdown call. Check the manufacturers website to see if there are any fixes or patches for your problem. You can also try turning off the screen saver to see if that makes a difference, but I'm not sure it would.
