The BIOS is a small, basic operating system that gets the computer going. It is most often contained on a special programmable memory chip (a type of ROM, read-only memory). This ROM is not a write once type chip but is electronically erasable and rewriteable. The process of doing this reprogramming is called flashing.

The above being said, flashing a BIOS does come with risks....the biggest being making the machine inoperable. If the chip is installed in a socket it can be replaced; if it is soldered to the board then the motherboard is toast. Most OEM (like HP/Compaq, PB, etc) machines have the chip soldered to the motherboard.
