My CD writer is 52x12x48x, but recently it would not write at any speed higher than 12x. I have tried two different software, NTI CD-Maker and Nero Express. Both have the same problem. When using Nero Express, it generated an error report containing the following-

Error Code: 1006
CDB: AA 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 1A 00 00
SenseKey:06 ASC:29 ASCQ:00

I have also tried two different disks, Imation and Maxell. Again, problem remains.

All the software and disks mentioned above had worked well before. The problem only occured recently.

My system is Windows XP Home, P4 2.4, 256 RAM, 60 Gb hd. Has anyone got any idea? Really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

welcome to pc guide.

not a definative answer, but a couple of things to check.

if changing cd s/w. make sure you have COMPLETELY erradicated the old before installing the new. they do not live well together.

I had some discs go 'bad' on me, so be sure that the media is fresh.

how old is the writer ? what make.?

have you recently changed anything ?

Yeah. This sounds like a CD burner problem - weak laser that can no longer write at 52X? At least it will still write at 12X.

Or you could get a new one for $20.

Thank you so much for both replies.

My PC is Acer. The CD writer came with the PC, and I don't know the original brand of the writer. It is about 6 months old, so it is still under warranty. But I have to establish that it's hardware, not software, problem first, as the warranty only cover hardware.

Thanks again for your valuable advice.

Make sure the media you are using are certified for at least 48x.

Make sure they are CD-R and not CD-RW.

Make sure that they are truly different media. Don't rely on brand name as a soruce of being different. Use your burning software's ability to read the manufacturer info directly form the disk (ATIP info).
