Hi, I have a sound card with two outputs on it. I want to use one for the pc speakers and the other for output to a hi fi. It works fine with 98se but when I try it with XP no sound comes from the second output. I've installed what I think are the latest drivers, but still no joy.
What do y'all think?

Try opening the volume controls either from the volume icon in the task bar or go to
Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio Tab > Advanced
and make sure that the outputs are showing and not muted.

Done that, none are muted.

What is the make of the soundcard and which output isnt functioning?
Have you checked Device Manager to be sure the card is functioning correctly?

C-Media wave device cm18738/c3dx PCI audio device.
Device manager says its working ok.
Its the second output that's not working.
It's possible that the card is not compatible with Win XP.
How old is it?
Are the installed drivers designed for use with XP?
Did you try different drivers, or the generic XP drivers?

The driver is for XP and the card seems to work ok except for the second output, so I guess I'll just have to live with it.
Thanks for the help...x

You can get a cable splitter at Radio Shack or maybe other retail outlets that are made for using two pairs of headphones, but with a couple of adapters and maybe an additional Y cable (to go from stereo to individual lines for each side) should allow you to run to a stereo as well, from one output. Just make sure it's a Line Out, not Speaker Out...the speaker out is a higher impedance signal and can damage stereo amps.

Thanks Paleo Pete, I'll do that.
