Hey Gang,

Ok, everything is working hunky dory with the new motherboard in the wife's computer, except:

It won't power down with software. The last two motherboards that I've had in there would power down completely by going to Start/Shutdown. All I get with the new mobo is the message, "It's now safe to......"

So, I've been using the switch on the power bar to turn it off after I receive the message.

What's going on? I have looked in BIOS under the Power Management settings and cannot see anything relative to this problem. If I had the front panel wires backwards for the power switch, would that cause this? Everything seems to work as it should though, the power button, reset button, IDE LED's all work correctly.

Do certain motherboards support the s/w power down and others don't?

Thanks for any opinions.

I've seen some systems sit for upto a minute at that screen before they go off...have let it sit for a while?

And if you use the button to kill it there are no "bad shutdown" problems, right?

Thanks, MJC. No, I have not let it sit for very long. I went by the amount of time that my other computers shut off, and figured, well, it's not going to shut off.

No, no scandisk on next boot up. I don't turn it off with the power bar until I see the orange lettering, "It's now safe to turn off your computer".

Guess I will have to be more patient and see what happens.

Update:

I sat here and stared at it for a good four to five minutes tonight. However, I could not intimidate it into shutting off by itself.

Any other ideas????

Nope...never seen 'em take that long...and not really...unless maybe the ps isn't getting the signal

I loaded Win2k onto an Emachine that wouldn't turn off via software until I went into Device Manager > View > Show Hidden Devices. Under System Devices was a disabled power controller (I forget the name); enabling it gave me the full power-down.

Thanks, Kenja. I'll try that tonight.

I'm beginning to think it's due to the fact that the board is OEM. I am somewhat irritated by the whole thing, because CSO was not very explicit in their description of the board.

Oh, and come to find out, the UWAVE version of the AZ31 is mostly for the big C word, although it's supposed to work on non-Compaq systems. I didn't know that either, until after I got the board.

Moral of the story; research, research and research some more. However, I can't say that I am disatisfied with it by any measure. It's been very stable so far. (knock on wood) And, the price was right.

Well, I'm not going to give up just yet. Perseverance is my nature and I will continue on until I get to the point where I have to accept it as is.

Thanks.

If it is primarily used by Compakard then it may be that the ps isn't getting the signal to shutdown, because they use a proprietary power suplly...it may have different wiring than standard.
