I have just got my spanking new machine from novatech. 1.6 Athlon, 256 MB RAM, and a 32MB Geforce 2 graphics card. A spec you would think can handle almost anything you could throw at it. But I have been trying to run Max Payne and even with the lowest detail settings it suffers from what looks like a buffering problem at regular intervals the game slows down and becomes choppy along with the sound. Would it be a hardware confliction? Buffering? Gratefull for any help.

Hey,
Sounds like too many programs running in the background. If you're running ME, disable the restore feature.
And, no matter which OS you're running, press Ctrl,Alt,Del ONCE, before attempting to run the game. The Close Program dialog box should appear. Highlight each line item except Explorer and SysTray and choose end task. Try running the game then.
Let us know what happens.
