In order to defrag correctly I close all programs except "Explorer"
by Ctrl+Alt+Del followed by End Task. When I try to close down Windows98 after this the sytem locks up and I have to use the Resst button, which is not a good thing. I presume that one of the tasks that I have "Ended" is needed to close down Windows.
Any help would be appreciated.

You can get by without systray for something like defrag...you don't really need the clock for that...but instead of going through the shutdown on the start menu just <ctrl><alt><del> twice to reboot....and yes you probably are shutting something off but not something needed for shutdown, but something that is being looked for to shutdown.

I don't think it's neccarry to shut down everything.
I have my defrag on a schedule and I don't have any problems.

One of the problems with the W9X family is their inherent instability in handling system resources and memory, especially if it's not an OEM install but one of theose systems you buy from a vendor that has a " clone " image from a Master restore disk.

One of the few good things to come out of the windows ME version was a newer algorithym for the Defrag program, in fact it's about 15-20% faster and seems to be more reliable, i copied it to one of my W98se systems and it does run quicker and much more efficiently.

If you have problems running defrag, boot into safe mode then run it-there are no extra drivers or peripheral programs running in the background to distract it.

Or go to this website and get the WinME version of defrag and copy it over your Win98 version-you'll see an improvement in it's performance.

{note:}-

You'll have to rename your original Defrag.exe to defrag.old, then extract this file ( called newdefrag.exe ) to your C:\windows directory and rename it to Defrage.exe

Don't know about your system, but I am running Win98 SE, and after d/l the WinME defrag program, I don't have to close anything down to defrag. Nice not to have to do any more "three finger salutes"!
