Hello, I have just received my new vid card and I installed it flawlessly. I have downloaded the newest drivers from Nvidia's site. My question is do I have to uninstall the old drivers and then install the new one or can I just install over the old one?
Thank You:p

It seems to depend on the difference in version with NVidia. When I upgraded from original drivers a while back it told me to first remove the old ones as they were incompatible. But recently when I upgraded to the latest ones from the previous upgrade it happily went on over the top and has been working better ever since.

It may be better to remove the old ones just to be one the safe side.

So how exactly do I remove the old one? BTW, the one I'm currently using is 43.51 and the one I downloaded is 52.16.
Thanx:cool:

You should probably be able to upgrade directly with those versions, since the ones that seemed to have incompatibility were early 20 series. Like I said it was a while ago.:D

But if you do go ahead and remove the old you just need to go into device manager and uninstall the device and reboot. Then there shouldnt be any chance of conflict when installing the new drivers.

I don't recommend installing new drivers without (at the very least) removing previous drivers through Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.

From nvidia's website, driver installation hints:

Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.
Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel. Browse to the Start Menu > Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove.

Some problems... After I uninstalled the old drivers, it rebooted and went into windoze as normal. Then I installed the new one and then rebooted. That's when the problem occurred. My comp refused to go into windoze for 3 times until I select use last know good configuration.

I tried to install it again but it always seem to stall at 41% and then prob 10-15secs later it flash the complete message. I rebooted but when windoze came on and I go into advanced properties, it doesn't show the card there.

HELP!!!

I don't recall the whole text of the message but it was something like "setup is complete". When I try to do it manually this came up "there was a problem installing this hardware: Video Controller (VGA compatible) An error occurred during the installation of this device. Accessed is denied."
:(

PS: Yes I'm using winXP pro

How did you originally remove the drivers?

Is there anything listed in Add/Remove programs related to nvidia or any video drivers? If so, remove.

Is the adapter listed in device manager? Try safemode for this.

Remove anything related in add/remove programs.
Right click on adapter in device manager and remove. Do not reboot, just shutdown. Unplug the power, remove and reseat the video card. Boot up. New Hardware Wizard should come up. Cancel out and try installing new drivers again.

PS- Make sure the drivers are for WinXP, and that you have administrator rights. ;)

I did exactly as you've said but it still gives me that error. I originally remove the old drivers by control panel > add/remove program and remove the Nvidia drivers for win2k/XP. Yes I always log on as the administrator. Should I try some old Detonator drivers instead of the new Forceware? BTW this is ti4200 with 8x.
Thanx:)

Lucky me I manage to find that old driver store somewhere on my HD and install it. Now it's all good again, although I'm still curious why it doesn't want to work with the Forceware?
Thanx Malcore and Pave;)

PS: as u know this is ti4200 with 128mb of mem so the clock speed should be 250/444 but when I use coolbits to check the speed, its 250/513? Should I downgrade it or no. BTW this is a BFG brand and it seems to be made 04/23/03.:D

I think it's just the shortcomings of "unified driver architecture". Some have success with the older Ti cards and forceware drivers, some have terrible results, not even being able to open the control panel without a "catastrophic" ;) error.

It always seems if you don't have one of the latest crop of cards, the newest drivers are a bit of a crapshoot. With the varying system configs out there, some work, some don't. Choosing the perfect driver for your setup has always been trial and error, never quite scientific.

If you like to experiment, try some the drivers released between what you have now and the latest forceware. Other than that, glad the new card is working, and I wouldn't worry too much about those clock speeds. Play a few games or run a few benchmarks. If all works well, you're good to go. Enjoy. :)

Is THIS (http://www.bfgtech.com/4200_redux.html) the right card? If so the 250/513 sounds closer to the specs of the 64 MB version. Are you certain they sent you the 128MB card?

EDIT-- If they did then I agree with malcore, dont worry too much about it.

Hmm ok...the pic on that site is the exact same one as mine. This must be the newer version than the one they selling at tigerdirect since it have nice fan and some ram sinks or copper whatever:D
Hmm highest score on 3dmark so far is only 6533...prob its my sdram and 1ghz cpu holding it back.
Ciao thanx again:p
