OK here's my specs.

Pent III 500
192 RAM
13.3g HD
VooDoo3 16mb
US Robotics 56k Voice/Fax Modem
Win 98

Heres the problem. I recently rebuilt this pc for my brother to use and when I used it last it had a network card installed in it and i didnt use the modem. Well I built a new one and removed the network card and now he needs to use the US Robotics 56k Modem but it wont work. It gives the message that it detects no dial tone. I have installed the drivers for it, removed anything to do with network cards off the system, tried different phone lines, still nothing. If if go to the properties of the modem and tell it not to wait till it detects a dialtone it will dial but not connect to anything. Im wondering if theres something im forgetting or is the modem just shot to hell? Oh yea and i have checked to make sure it is in a com port and that it is hooked up properly and that there is no conflicts with the device. Thanks for any help.

Ok first go to control panel, then to the modem Icon, open it, then diagnostics. Then click on the com port your modem is on. Then click on more info, do you get any thing there? If so make sure if you have call answer you have no messages on your phone, if you do it won't detect a dial tone. Also see if you can try it on another computer, also sometimes if you move it to a different pci slot it helps, not all the time but can. And make it wait for a dial tone, bypassing it won't solve your problem if you have one. Also do you hear it dialing out?

Also boot into safe mode and go into device manager and see if all the former devices are actually gone...called "ghost drivers". Check the settings...and the phone cord, just replace it...modems can be much more sensitve to a line problem than a phone.

Also replace the modem. If the above suggestions don't produce results then don't spend anymore time on it. The modem sounds shot to me.

Good Luck

Hello,

Had the same problem before. Here are some steps to try:

1) as mentioned above, go into control panel, then to the modem Icon, open it, then diagnostics. Then click on the com port your modem is on. Then click on more info. You should be able to see in a window at the bottom some AT commands. If you do, then your modem is OK, alive (especially if is detected).

2) when you plug in your phone in the modem card, do you get a dial tone ?
3) what COM port is your modem on ?
4) did you try to uninstall (from device manager) the modem and reboot, and let windows detect it (or detect it manually) same results ?
5) some modems create a virtual com port (ex. your modem would be detected on COM3 but the COM3 port would not appear in device manager). In these situations, you need a enumarator that would appear in device manager and the modem should appear as well)
6) as well, check this option that might have an impact :
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Accessibility Options.
On the General tab, either:
Click to clear the Support SerialKey devices check box, or
Click Settings, click a different COM port in the Serial port box, and then click OK.
Click OK

Let us know what happens,

I had the same problem, and in my case it was caused for an
ald version of the driver. When i`ve downloaded the update, the
modem keep on malfunctioning, so i unninstalled it from the device mannager and let windows detected it at the boot up. Then it works perfectly.

Have you checked the cable , (from modem to phone socket)? Also try plugging modem into different phone socket if possible
