Hey all, ive got an asus A7N266-VM mobo, and ive plugged it all in, but the monitor wont come on at all, not even a hint of life, ive tried several monitors but none work, this is just using the onboard geforce no extra cards. what could possibly be causing this?

Welcome to the PC Guide.

Please provide some more information:

1) Your system specs
2) New build or old system?
3) A more detailed description of what happens when you flip the switch.
4) Has it ever worked?

well this is an old system it use to be a pentium 2 but im putting a 1800+ in it with a A7N266-VM mobo with built in geforce 2. It still has original power supply harddisk and cdrom. It has 256 ddr ram, doesnt have any extra cards in.

Before i put the new mobo in etc there was a pentium 2 in there, it was working fine and i was going to make it a server for internet sharing, but for some reason it wouldnt get past the ide scan at boot up, i tried restarting it a few times then when i switched it on a 10th or so time nothing was being sent to the monitor, it just stays in standby mode, the monitor that is. I tried using 2 other monitors and they didnt work with it either, i tried putting in several other cards graphics cards, a few olds ones i had still didnt work. So i thought i must have damaged the mobo or something so ive now put in the A7N266-VM and it still just doesnt work. I then got a new power supply, 235v same as the one before, but just to see if it was that that was faulty, but no it still didnt work. I have no idea at all what could be causing this,do i need a bigger power supply if so what one? or would it be a hell of alot easier to just get a router?

Thanks

Do the fans and lights work?

Yeah, we need to know what happens when you turn it on. Fans and lights? Completely dead? Or does it act like it's trying to boot - HD, CD, floppy access lights flashing, HD spinning up?

These Diagnostic Flowcharts will help you
www.erniek.eclipse.co.uk/downloads/sylvanderdiags.zip

Download them and print them to flip through.
Begin on the STARTUP chart.
If you do not hear a single short beep shortly after switching on then the POST has not completed and therefore your video card would not be enabled.
If my guess is right, when answering the chart questions you will probably be directed to the NO POST chart.
I wonder if the BIOS on the new motherboard is properly configured to work with the hardware you have connected to it? Probably not and that's why it will not complete the POST.
As directed by the NO POST chart [assuming thats where you end up] you should strip back the hardware to the bare essentials and see if it will POST and then enable the display.
See if it does and take it from there.

it boots up like it normally does all the fans, leds come on etc etc just like any other pc just nothing is being sent to the monitor. Going through all the flow charts gave me an idea that it might be to do with before i took that motherboard out i was using a different graphics card and i might have disable the on boards graphics card, i cleared the bios by taking the battery out but alas the bloody thing still won't come on.

Did you check for a MB jumper to clear CMOS?
If there's none, then how long did you have the CMOS battery removed? It should to be removed for an hour or longer.

Is the onboard video adapter enabled in BIOS?

If that does not help, then try starting up with just the power supply, MB, CPU, system speaker, and power-on button installed, and place the MB on a piece of cardboard.
If you do not hear any beeps, then the MB, CPU, or PS may be bad.

If you hear beeps, then install the memory.
Same beeps? Memory may be bad.

Here's an example of how to use the charts:

START UP TEST
1. Is the PC dead? No. [You have fans, lights, etc]
2. Did POST appear to run? No.
3. Were there any audible beeps? No. [a single short beep indicates successful completion of POST]
4. This indicates Power-On Self-Test failed to complete. [NO POST] And therefore the Video Card is not enabled and no signal is sent to the Monitor.

NO POST
1. Are the PSU voltages correct? Check them if you can. If they are not you may have a faulty PSU. Assuming they ARE ok then:
2. Disconnect all peripherals and system adaptor cards except the keyboard and video card/monitor.
3. Does the POST now run? If it doesn’t then your system board [or something on it (video card, CPU, memory)] is faulty. If it does run then:
4. Re-connect the floppy disk drive and run advanced diagnostic software from a floppy disk.
[Get “TuffTest-Lite” from http://www.tufftest.com/free.htm or better if you can. This is simple and basic.]
5. Does the system board pass? If not then it is faulty. If it does pass then:
6. Switch off and re-connect ONE peripheral/adaptor card.
7. Does POST now run? If it doesn’t this last device connected is faulty and should be disconnected. If it does run the device should be tested using the diagnostics and if it fails is faulty and should be disconnected. If it passes it's ok and should be included.
8. Repeat from step 6 until all devices are tested, all faulty are excluded and all working are included, then re-test the system.

If you want to simplify the test for a first attempt at a fix you could assume the PSU is ok and leave out the tests with diagnostic software.
