View Full Version : PCI Ultra 133 Controler Card
- Cannot boot hard drive with previously installed XP operating system.
- Works fine when connected back to the main board.
- Note: If I format and reinstall OS through PCI controler card it workes fine.
* So what I am trying to say is; When I am installing OS on a Ultra 66 main board with a ATA 133 hard disk, how come when I put the PCI ultra 133 card in it can't boot from it.

Sounds like its probably a driver issue.
Installing the OS when connected to the motherboard and then switching to a PCI card means the OS would not have the correct driver setup to deal with the changed hardware setup.
PCI drivers installed.
I checked under Device Manager.
I think It's a direction (point to problem)
Your right, the setup has something to do with it.
I think this happened to me once before.
I thought I had corrected it by going into cmos/first boot device/scsi.
And or making sure my hard drive was set up as a master and hooked up to the correct cable port.

Different horses for different courses; that is to say that different mobos and their bios and different controllers will require different configurations. The basic problem is probably in getting the bios to detect/point to the "correct" boot partition.
Yes, the card will probably need to be detected as a scsi device in the bios boot order - but some mobos will not boot to a controller card if any HDDs are still attached to the mobo.
Anothere fix might be to "disable" all the relevant IDE controllers in the bios by turning off auto or otherwise set them to none or not installed.
Basically, if there are problems in getting the BIOS to find the boot device, one is turning off all other possible boot drives so that BIOS will eventually find the contoller's drive.
One other potential problem with XP is that it will now think it is on a new PC and require reactivation.
Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and diskhardware. Please check the Windws documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional imformation.
Just thought I would throw this in.
I would like to thank you all for your input.
SiI0680/0680A: Data sheet and Schematics
Attached on the right are the data sheet and schematics for the SiI0680 and SiI0680A.
Comments/Special Instructions:
Please note that the SiI0680 and SiI0680A are functionally the same, but the output drive bias resistors are different for the SiI0680 and SiI0680A. The SiI0680 requires 7.5KW on pins 41 and 77 whereas the SiI0680A require 1.74KW.
Sorry about all this mumbo jumbo I FOUND THIS CHEAP PCI I/O CARD on www.tigerdirect.com I got what I paid for.
IT turn out I needed a third party driver during winxp setup...just hit F6 and follow the instructions.
Thanks again for all your insight.
