When I place a disc in the tray, any disk, I hear a clicking noise, not the usual spinning sound heard when a disc is being read, and I get an error message telling me to insert a disc. I've checked to see if the computer is reporting any problems with the drive, it says it's running fine. I've tried removing the drive both in safemode and normal mode and then rebooting, but it does not work. The Drive is a Hitachi DVD-ROM GD-2500 and came with the computer when I bought it. Any advice?
How old is it?
Generally a clicking sound instead of spinning sounds are not good signs...the drive may be history.

Since you've tried in normal and safe mode, I'd have to agree that the drive is more than likely toast. Maybe you can attempt to clean it, but being that its actually making a sound, best bet is to replace.
