good afternoon,
i have a serious problem. i have a friends computer. it is a asus atx multimedia system. k7m mob. amd 700, 8gig hd. 16meg agp video card. (nvidia tnt). i blew the hard drive, and reformated it and reinstalled win 98. my problem is when it booted up, it found new hardware. it says it found standard vga display adapter (pci). it has a agp card. i am not understanding why it will not regconize the agp. therefore, i can only get 16 colors. (not good folks). i removed the agp card, and installed one of my pci 4meg cards, and it picked it right up with no problem. i took it out, and put the agp card back in, and rebooted to the same deal, standard display adapter vga pci. what am i not doing right here. i have never come across a problem like this one, and i have blown and redone a lot of hd's. the man is waiting on his system (yikes), please save me a whole lot of humiliation and tell me what is wrong. all my little local tech buddies is like huh?. so i new i had to come to the professionals for the right help. thanks in advance for all th support. wish you all a good weekend. GOD BLESS.

Tad,

YEOW! With 32 Posts I would assume you've been around the Guide a bit...You've got this same post in 3 areas. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif This leads to redundant questions and answers and will ultimately wind up delaying getting the answers you are so desirous of getting.

Perhaps we out to just focus here in System Troubleshooting....Pete when you see this would you set us straight?

Have you been into the BIOS to check whether it is set to AGP?

yes sir, when i checked it, it said primary video adapter, pci. i changed it back to agp, but to no avail. this agp card was in there when i started working on it. how the bios reset it to pci is beyond me. thanks.

Ok, some details on the system, and has anything else been acting flaky?

If you change it to AGP, reboot and then power down, on restarting does it still say AGP or has it reverted back to PCI?

If it still says AGP try booting into safe mode and removing ALL the video cards that are found there, let it reinstall (it might do the standard VGA again) then try to install the latest drivers for it...if it doesn't stay at AGP try replacing the CMOS battery, then the above procedure.

thanks for your reply mjc. no, everything else seems to be doing fine. yes, after i reboot, the bios is still sitting at agp. i will try the safe mode deal, and see what becomes of that. i did however, remove the video card from the device manager and rebooted, but to no avail. my friend has a disk that has been burned by someone that says system drivers on it. i went into it, and it has k7m ide drivers, agp miniport, and also has a file that has a k7m flash in it. my question is, why would i have to flash the bios, if the board came with the agp port on it. also, me blowing the hard drive would not have anything to do with an updated bios would it? thanks for everything, i will go back and try what you said. i will check back for new posts about every 15-30 min. thanks again.

Down Load and Install the drivers for the Video card.(nvidia tnt)

Until you install these drivers windows see and install only basic vga drivers.
It doesn't know what is beyond that in the video card

hi, thanks for the reply. he has 3 floppy disk that have the velocity 4400 drivers on it. (supposed to be), but when i have it to serch the floppy, it saya it is running the best drivers. i will run and get the latest detonator series driver and try that. i am not understanding why windows is not recognizing the card. it seems that is why it will not serch for any drivers due to the fact it is only recognizing standard adapter. mjc, i did as you advised, and upon reboot, it picked right back upon the standard vga adapter. like i said in my earlier post, i can remove the agp card, install one of my pci cards, and it picks it up, installs drivers and it is ready to go. i just need it to, upon boot, see the agp card. thanks guys, i will see what the latest drivers will do. i will check back in a few.
