Hi, I am new to computers so I have what would be probably a simple solution to a Mouse problem.

You know that wheel in the at the top of the mouse? Well, it is not working today. It must be disabled or something. Any ideas?

Also, I had help in upgrading of 96 MB of ram to 192 MB of ram and it is much faster. However, I thought with more ram it would curtail some freezes I have been getting. Sometimes I get a blue screen and it says to press any key and nothing happens so I Alt, Control and delete to end it all and nothing happens so I have no choice but to press the power button off and rebot. I hate that because I am told that I could loose some files etc. Anything I could look into about that?

Welcome to http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif

There are a lot of different reasons that either problem could be happening and they may be related...

We need to know more about your system to be able to help. What are your computer specs, what version of Windoze are you using, what troubleshooting have you already done, when did you install the mouse, did you install the mouse drivers, have you recently installed any other hardware or software and so on and so on???? The more you can tell us, the more likely we can help....

Hi & welcome to the PC Guide!

1st the mouse problem. I would be inclined to check the mouse properties in the control panel first. Make sure the correct mouse is installed & that you have the scroll wheel set up correctly.

You dont mention which windows version you are using or if there was any other new hardware / software added recently?

2nd for the computer freezes.. No, more memory wont help - sorry :(

Something (s) will be grumpy which is causing the freezes. It may even be related to the mouse. To help us diagnose it we need more info again. Does it happen at particular times / when you are using particular application?

Have you added anything new (hardware / software) after which this has been happening?

What is the message at the top of the 'blue sceen' There may be a clue there.

You are correct - Powering off a pc incorrectly can (in some circumstances) lose data. Its definately not a good thing & so needs to be adressed quite urgently!

Post back with some more info & we will try to help.

Sudden failures can be due to heat, bad RAM, or a number of other issues. Have you blown the dust out of that machine lately?? Does it have adequate airflow??

You can download and run Memtest (http://www.memtest86.com/) or DocMem (http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp) to test the RAM...

As Inka said, check in Device Manager to see if any problem with the mouse is indicated. Also, have you cleaned the mouse lately??

Did the problems start after you upgraded Windoze???

There are ways to tell if you have conflicting programs. Try running Spybot and/or AdAware to start and see what they find. Be sure to update them first. You can find links to both in my signature...

 The memory test program was a bit to much. I clicked the "MemTest" one and clicked and guess at what I was supposed to download version 3.0 but it would not load. It showed the hour glass that it was downloading but never did anything.

I looked at the spybot program and I would have to really wait until I was more rested. It looks really involved. I mean so many decisions.
I will just take a rain check and just read up on this stuf.

On Spybot, the best bet is usually just to fix the items with a red checkmark... Generally those items are clearly bad...

As for Memtest and DocMem, you have to create a floppy disk and run them form boot if I remember (haven't used them for a while) and this is a bit complex, but pretty automatic once it is underway....

 For some unexplained reason my mouse wheel is now working. I have been told that if you close down the computer and reboot and might right itself. I have tried this but it was not working. But this morning it now is so I am going to let it go at that.

It could be that when I uninstalled some big programs that I hardly use it freed up some room and the FREEZE program thus far is gone. It is now running quite a lot faster and for now I am pleased.

I will continue to study the Spybot program to understand all before I implement this. I must tell you that I do not like programs that insist on having a icon showing down next to the clock at all times. Yes you can remove it Temp. but they come back. Some programs allow you to remove them Perm.

Spybot doesn't put an icon down by the clock at all times, so if you have one there, it probably isn't Spybot.... I haven't used the Immunizer function in Spybot, so if you are using that, it may put an icon there...

I have used the Immunize Feature in Spybot since it became available, Spybot does not put items in your system tray unless you configure it that way. It has a configuration section that lets you customize icons, startup, etc.

I find AdAware 6.0 (free) is easier for new users, and it works pretty well. I believe Spybot is faster and stable IMHO.
