A friend has just called me frantic that his nephew went and messed with his Outlook Express and after talking through a fix with T.S. at his ISP he now has O.E. back up but all of his past messages and address book are gone. No, he didn't back up O.E. but is there a way of restoring his registry to back what it was the day before the "nephew from hell" came by to visit???

Thanks Yoda but I think that course of action would mess up too many other things that we don't want to mess with. Let me ask another question though. I found a heading under the tools section of the "System Information" utility labeled "Internet Explorer Repair Tool". In that section is a selection for restoring previous Outlook Express settings. However, "Internet Explorer Repair Tool" heading doesn't appear on my friends machine. Is that because he has IE 5.0 and I'm using 5.5? Was this added btwn the two versions?

If he loads Ver. 6.0 on top of his current one, won't that erase or eliminate his ability to restore what he had two days ago??? BTW, I had a lot of troubles with 6.0 a month or so ago whereupon I went back to 5.5. It kept locking up on me so I went back. It was just after 6.0 was released. I figured there were some bugs in it being that it was newly released. As far as you know, is it working fine now?

if you look at the site to the right he can take his choice.I run six have no problems with it not really much different than 5.5 .........
as far as him losing what he had two day's ago ?
if he has windows 98 ?? use the Registry checker.Backups are stored in Windows\Sysbckup folder as .cab files xxx.cb follow directions on second the site? unless you can figure out a way to put system Restore on there.

Hey,
If this problem has happened in the last five days, and you are using WIN98, and you have ScanReg loading at startup (you can tell by running msconfig and checking to see if the litle box beside the line item labeled, "ScanReg" is checked), then do the following.
Boot the computer to an MS-DOS prompt. On WIN98 machines, the easiest way to do this is to hold down the Ctrl key while it's booting up. You should be presented with a startup menu. Choose the option that says, "Command Prompt Only". Let it continue to boot to the C:\ prompt. Once you're at the C:\ prompt, type the following:
Scanreg /restore
A box will pop up showing you the last five days worth of registry backups.
Pick one with a date before the nephew problems occurred, and choose to restore it. Follow the prompts to either continue booting, or to reboot.
Now, you will be back at the point you were, before the problems occurred.
However, keep in mind that this will negate any changes he/she made as a result of talking to tech support. But, that shouldn't make any difference. The registry will be back to the point it was before the nephew arrived.
Have fun. Good luck. Cheers,
Big Blue 66
