Hi all,

There has been weirdness going on with my north bridge temperatures ever since I got this mobo. Temp has been set on or at about 56-59°C. This will be either at load, when idle, during heavy gaming,... It never goes up or down more than 3 degrees, and those temp-movements aren't always in sync with usage (eg. idle temps are sometimes higher than load  ) I replaced the cooling unit, but with no effect.
At all.

Therefore I have concluded that the thermal probe in the mobo is cr*p,
and have decided to purchase a Coolermaster Aerogate II, which comes with 4 thermal probes to be placed as I wish. Hopefully this will lead to accurate thermal readings IF I get it set up right.

So that's the question: Does anybody have any experience with installing thermal probes? I found some articles online, but no real installing guides. Where do I put it for best measurements? What do I have to watch out for? What should I certainly do/not do?

Any insights apreciated!

I have an Enermax UC-A5FATR2 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-999-214&catalog=11&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=1), which has two temp monitors, 6 fan controls (of which it monitors the RPM of 2), and a low RPM/high temperature alarm. Setup was a cinch and I'm sure you won't have any problems setting yours up as either.

Probe placement is strait forward as long as simple common sense is utilized. I have my unit monitoring the CPU heat sink and north bridge heat sink. Other good places could be you video card's GPU heat sink and the surface temp of your primary hard drive.

ah yes, looked into that set as well. What I'm realy wondering is: do you place the Tprobe in between the hs and the proc? I guess not, but then where? I read of some people drilling holes in their hs at the bottom, others just putting it real close to the side of the chip. Where exactly did you put yours?

IF you were to drill a hole in the bottom of the HS you would need a steady hand and a clear eye, to reduce the risk severely reducing the HS efficiency.

The Asus board I use has a built-in probe and the Thermaltake fans I use for the CPU have a specialized probe that resides under the Heatsink...

Sorry, I'm not being much help here...:( But, it's Saturday morning and I'm looking for a good excuse not to go to work...:D

I have my probes just taped to the side of the two heatsinks, which doesn’t give the most accurate temps, but it does allow me to monitor relative temperature fluctuation. I think in this (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27111) thread, Delslo mentioned getting good results by placing the probe between the CPU and heat sink (but not between the actual core and heat sink).

I don’t think it’s necessary to drill a hole in you heat sink as it could do more harm than good.
