having just replaced the m/b I am now using onboard audio instead of soundblaster card.
I get a long beep at POST and message that "PCI card not found, soundblaster driver not loaded"
I cant find where to remove said items.

Have you looked in Device Manager for errors?

When do you get the "PCI card not found, soundblaster driver not loaded" message? Will it continue to boot after the beep and message? Also what OS are you running?

Usually you would go to Device Manager in Safe Mode and delete the Soundblaster device and then reboot. Windows should look for devices actually existing at reboot, and should ask for any needed drivers.

I'm on a new m/b now so the soundblaster card is not fitted, but am using the original hdd, I have updated all the drivers etc. and have an 'all clear' in device manager.
during POST I get long beep and reports
"PCI card not found, soundblaster driver not loaded"
then POST continues with no user intervention and w98se loads, there seems to be no error with the systen whatsoever (so far) but I can't find soundblaster to disable it.

I had a similar problem with a network card, I forgot to uninstall before removing. But it never affected the post only windows gave a warning of missing hardware.
In the end I had to put the card back before it would show up so I could uninstall the drivers. And it had to be the same slot or else windows recognised it as new hardware and installed another set of drivers for it.

this is a new m/b. the card was fitted on the old m/b which eventually refused to boot. I don't even have a spare PCI slot in this so that I could try it.
I have set up a complete fresh install on another hdd but it is only a small one. but everything is fine on it. my original intention was to do a drive image from that and install/ghost/image/whatever it over to the original hdd. but I thought there may be something on the original hdd that I hadn't backed up, so I just booted it up and put all the drivers in that it asked for (most were on single CD or w98se anyway as eveything is on board) however modem was short of a 'riser' so I had to buy a new PCI one which took up the last of my 2 slots (TV card in other one) not many I know but there are 4 usb (2) ports plus 2 more if required (rather have had more pCI slots though)

Try deleting Soundblaster references in the config.sys file and autoexec.bat on C:. You can edit these files with Notepad, then resave them.

That shouldn't affect the POST, though. You may need to either enter CMOS setup and then save and exit, or reload failsafe defaults for the BIOS. If it were a lingering driver problem, the message would be displayed long after the POST, most likely just before the Desktop is displayed.

I don't think this is happening during post. There aren't any error messages during post like the one he is getting. Error references to the Soundblaster drivers could only occur later.
It is quite common for Soundblaster software to write configuration programs for DOS that appear in config.sys or autoexec.bat files. But the error message could also be from Windows.

there was a reference in msconfig/autoexec.bat which ai have unticked and it has stopped the problem.
