Hello All:

Not quite sure where to put this, so I'll start here.

My current computer has USB 1.1. If I purchased a USB external HDD which today would be USB 2.0, I'm sure, would the USB 2.0 HDD be campatible/work with the USB 1.1 on my computer?

Thanks in advance

Yes it probably would, but very s..l..o..w..l..y..... Check what it says in the specs for the drive...

Your best bet would be to get a USB 2.0 PCI card to add some USB 2.0 ports.

It works but would communicate the data slower than USB 2.0

USB 1.1 has a max transfer rate of 12Mbps; USB 2.0 = 480Mbps.

You might look at installing a USB 2.0 PCI card if your setup/budget allows.

And Budfred types faster than I do...:D

If I get a USB2 card and install it, what happens to the old USB 1.1 that is already installed? I have my printer connected to the USB 1.1, will it still work?

Thanks

Yes- Your printer on the old 1.1 ports will most likely still work.

You can also plug your Printer into one of the new 2.0 ports and it will be found as new hardware and work there too..The cards are "backward compatable"
(Of course, the printer won't work at the new 2.0 High Speed transfer rate, but at the rate you are presently used to).

At least that's been my experience, and I just installed two of them....One for me and one for a friend. :)
