Loading win-95 on Compaq, deskpro, 4GB HDD. I used the FDISK program to set up drives C and D due to 2-GB limit in win-95.Formatted c and d drives. Everything looked ok even had to set up O/S by pointing to E drive, installed OS and when sys booted to desktop I only have C drive and (D drive is now CD-ROM) any ideal what happened to my other drive.

thanks

What happens if you try to boot with a boot disk. Does the system in this case recognize your second partition?
If you boot from a floppy disk the boot sequence neednīt look up the MBR (master boot record).

Maybe your hard diskīs MBR is the problem.

Hi triplej, when you said you set up your drive into two partitions, did you:
Create a primary partition for eg. 50% of the drive and set it as active.
Create an Extended partition for the remaining 50%
Create a Logical drive for 100% of the Extended partition.

If you just created the Extended partition without going through the Logical drive routine then you won't see it.

I fdisk and format by the book. After this is completed I check the drives (C) and (D) C drive reads, Volume in drive C has no label, Volume seral number is 3B1C-1OF, Command Com 92,870 07-11-95 9.50a, 1 File(s) 92,870 bytes, O dir,s , 2,001,797,120 bytes free.
Drive (D) reads volume in drive D has no label, Volume serial number is 1C21-10F6, Directory of D:\, File not found, 2,002,157,568 bytes free. I switch two E drive for loading of win-95 system does a sys scan of C and D drives and reports no errors found. Sys loads O/S but after booting to the desktop I only have C drive and D drive is my CD-ROM drive. When I check the drives with the fdisk program the drives are still there and E drive is still my CD-ROM drive.

Thanks

Hi triplej,

Go to an MS DOS Prompt and type FDISK
When the next screen appears change the [Y] to [N] and hit enter. (Just to be consistent, it doesn't really matter because you will be exiting without making changes).
At the next screen type in the number 4 and hit enter.

This screen should show you your Primary partition and Extended partition.

Near the bottom of this screen it should say:

The Extended DOS partition contains Logical DOS drives.
Do you want to display the logical drive information <y/n>.......<y>
Hitting enter at this point should bring you to a screen displaying your Logical drive information.

If you do not get this far, then you a have no logical drive created within the Extended partition.

Exit FDisk by hitting the Esc key on your keyboard.

Post back the results.
