Anyone please help me with problem that is driving me mad. I have a USB 6 in
1 Card Reader which I have been using successfully for the last 6 months. I
plugged it in yesterday and the "busy" light on the unit lit up and stayed
lit continuosly. The computer locked up also with the hourglass icon
displayed. When I clicked CTL/ALT/DEL I got the message Msgsrv32 (not
responding). When I restarted and plugged the Card Reader in again the same
thing happened but I didn't type CTL/ALT/DEL I just unplugged the Card
Reader and the icon on the screen went from an hourglass back to a pointer
(i.e unlocked itself). I have found an article about Msgsrv32 which said
that problems sometimes occur if your using power management (which I was).
I disabled power management but the problem still occurs.
Many Thanks
Andy
PS I use Win98SE

I assume you tried un-installing any special drivers that came with the reader then re-installing?
Tried a different USB port?

Checked device manager to be sure USB is operating correctly? (Possibly try another USB device just to be sure they are?)

I'm not being much help here, but it's also possible your card reader got tired of reading.

Thanks for replying. I tried everything known to man and I have
finally solved the problem but I still don't know why and what happened.
My Card Reader was plugged into a 4 port mini-hub which connected into a USB extension cable into one of the 2 USB ports on the back of my computer.
Simple enough but it stopped working!!
I then connected the mini-hub directly into one of the 2 USB ports on the back of the computer and left the cable out and suprise suprise everything worked!! Faulty cable I thought!! I then connected the USB extension cable into the mini-hub and connected the Card Reader to the USB extension cable and this WORKED. I then realised that I had taken all the cables out from the back of the computer a few days ago to clean the dust from the inside and the USB extension cable and keyboard USB ports had been swapped around mistakenly. I changed them round to their original setting and connected the mini-hub to the USB extension cable and connected the Card Reader (which locked up before) and hey presto everything worked. I can't understand why it makes a difference which USB port is used (or does it?). Do you know any different?

Glad you got it sorted out.
It's been my experience that certain USB cards and hubs will "detect new hardware" all over again when using a different port other than the original.

I know for example that my USB 2.0 Flash drive had to be recognized in each of my 5 USB 2.0 ports. Thereafter, I can just plug it into any of them and it's ready to use. (Same with my Digital camera).
Precisely why this is, maybe someone else can explain

I have also had problems using poor quality USB extension cables in the past.

Anyway....All's well that ends well! ;)
