Any Yellow ! or ? in Device Manger?
Most peeps round here recommend a clean install rather than an upgrade (put over ?). If the ports are enhanced (USB2.0) they may need WinXPSP1 to work at full speed - though they should function at slower speeds none-the-less.
Do you have the drivers/utilities CD for the motherboard?

Are you sure? If truly so you can get the chipset drivers from http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/Driver/Driver_GA-7ZXE.htm
If you have enough HD space you could try adding a second (dual boot) clean installation of WinXP. If all works properly and after you've copied over everything you want from your original setup you can delete the old setup. Alternatively consider starting over with a clean installation of XP after you have backed up everything you want from your current setup (a good thing to do in any case).
Only other thoughts are that USB has somehow been turned off in the BIOS setup and to check Device Manager in Safe Mode.

Yes- Certainly wouldn't hurt to check Bios and see if USB is disabled.
(I've had strange things like that happen even with a clean install of XP).
As much of a pain as it can be, I'm with Paul that a clean install is the way to go with XP. It's a completely different animal than 98 and I've heard of similar (or even more irritating problems) when performing an "upgrade".
If you're not sure exactly what motherboard you have, the USB drivers might work from the motherboard CD. (I know I grabbed some internal modem drivers once off an old CD once that worked back when I was on dial-up)
Another alternative, (though it would be a shame), is to install a USB 2.0 PCI card. Heck, everyone has one of them just sitting around huh?
I would only settle for this if the Motherboard had USB 1.1 support only, in which case an upgrade to 2.0 would be nice.
And Paul is correct...You would need XPSP1 for 2.0 support.
Other than that, my rambling probably hasn't helped at all. :( ;)

I agree with the above, a clean install is usually preferable to an "overinstall", especially with XP.
I've worked with that same motherboard before, if it is the 7ZXE, I'm pretty sure it has USB1.1, not 2. And yes, it does have to be enabled in BIOS. I can't remember but I think the motherboard CD only has support for Win9x, NT and 2000 but not XP. WAtch the BIOS settings though, you don't need "USB Legacy Support" enabled, that's for win95 type stuff, look for the "Enable onboard USB". (might be onchip instead of onboard, I think that's what Gigabyte calls it.
As long as the onboard USB is enabled in BIOS XP shouldn't have any trouble picking it up and using it. I've built several systems using that board and XP, never had any problems with it.
