From my experience, I highly recommend Wiltrot's first link (to Crucial).

If you're really struggling to find out your motherboard manufacturer use the FCC ID code that is printed on almost every mobo then go here:
www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/

Note: It is. EXTREMELY important from the point of BIOS updates, that you get the MANUFACTURER of your mobo and not the name on the box that it came in. Mobo's like everything else are repackaged and sold on.

You can also get the MANUFACTURER's details from the startup screen. When the BIOS loads there is a code that pops up on the POST screen ie:

http://www.biostar-usa.com/bioshelp.asp

PS - Here's a list and a half of mobo manufacturers:

My motherboard has no ID on it whatsoever. Fortunately I found this site:

www.lavalys.com

They have a program called Everest, which when downloaded will identify your motherboard etc and, if I remember right, recommend the correct drivers.

My motherboard turned out to be a SiS.

I am at present busy with an old desk top PC and am trying to ID the mobbo. The only info I have is 3A 2013 printed on it. The company who manufactured it no longer exist (The PC Co.). Without takeing the mobbo out completely how can I source the information. The PC is not operable @ the moment.

What's the processor? Socket type? BIOS chip info? any onbboard devices like sound? What is the defunct companies name?

There must be more to go on...

I find the info posted here re motherboard info very helpful. My Compaq Presario Laptop model 2500 recently bit the dust as a result of a nasty power surge. The machine will not power up, just sits there. My local computer store (whom I trust entirely) told me it was the motherboard and I was faced with some serious costs i.e. >$500. My questions are: 1. To determine motherboard mfg. do I follow Hippy Warlocks suggestion re the FCC code? 2. Can a rank amateur embark on replacing the motherboard. 3. Is the cost quoted reasonable and if it is too risky to try and replace the board myself (I assume that I have to replace the current fried mobo with an exact duplicate), then I guess I end up with an expensive door opener. Appreciate any advice on this subject. Thanks. The Rocket.

procket52, If you go here (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/prodinfoCategory?dlc=en&tool=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&cc=us&dest_page=prodinfoCategory&product=385154) , you will find a manual that will step you through the process. If that's not your model then go here (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/pfinder?tool=prodinfoCategory&query=+2500+&dest_page=prodinfoCategory&dlc=en&lc=en&cc=us) and pick the right one. Let's hope they still have mobo replacements. Cheerio.
