What is the most likely cause of screen flicker ?
It seems to be slowly getting worse and as it happens on both of my computers I suspect that my monitor is on the way out

In general, the most likely cause of "screen flicker" is the refresh rate of the monitor. (Basically, the lower the refresh rate, the more evident "flicker" is).
The fact that it's happening on two different computers does suggest that you may have problems with the Monitor or possibly the Cable connection. (Check and gently wiggle the cable where it connects to your video card and see if you can make it better of worse)
People may define "flicker" differently. A lose cable, bent pins, a bad video card and a few other things may cause what one would refer to as "flicker" but technically speaking, it is caused by a refresh rate that is set to low for a particular resolution.
In your case, if it "seems to be getting worse" and it happens on two different computers, your Monitor may indeed be on the way out.

If it is getting worse, most likely your monitor is, in fact, on it's way out. One other thing to check for is an electrical device that could cause interference with your monitor. There are several types of devices that can do this such as electric motors or even certain types of lamps (if you have one of those sunlight laps (or whatever they're called), move it far away from your monitor ASAP!)
Otherwise, it's probably living it's last days. Sorry about the bad news.

Turns out it was the refresh rate, which I have now changed from 60 to 75mhz and everything is fine.
Thanks

Good news Flybywyre!
Suppose I should have asked you what it was set at. Interesting though that it was at 60Hz on two different Computers with all the different settings available.
Anyway..Yes, at 70 to 75Hz and above, you really shouldn't notice any flicker.
Don't you wish all problems were that easy?
(btw....That's Hertz (HZ) not MHZ)

Please tell me, guys here, how to set the refresh rate of the screen.
I have the same problem which I think is referred to as a flicker, namely, like a very fast interruption of power to the monitor, lasting for a micro split of a second, which is just the same caught by our eye.
I didn't notice this event before, but it seems to be more often now.
This is a second hand monitor which I believe had seen action with the previous owner for maybe three or four years. It is of 1998 vintage and was on storage until a surplus dealer bought the lot; and I got one in a bargain assembly headed by a cpu of Pentiium II 233.
I don't use an automatic voltage regulator with this computer assembly, so I was thinking that it could be voltage variations. Yet when I used an AVR with this assembly covering also the monitor the problem stays.
Tell me, then good friends here, how to change the refresh rate of the monitor.
This item is still on warranty by the vendor, but I would not want to engage in the habit of exchanging it for another unit, unless and until it is a real hardware trouble owing to aging.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Pachomius2000!
You must have found this 6 month old thread with the search button huh?
;)
Anyway, right click on an open area of your desktop, select Properties, then Settings tab.
Then "Advanced" Button....the "Monitor tab" will allow you to check and/or change your refresh rate.
(There are other ways to get there, but that's one of them). ;)

It might vary a bit depending on your graphics card but try this.
right click on the desktop, left click properties, left click settings, left click advanced, left click monitor, then select the required refresh rate.
That should do the trick for you :)

Hi Flybywyre! Long time no see. ;)
Happens all the time when we are typing...someone often beats us to it!
For future reference, if it's within an hour of your post, you can just hit the "edit" button on the upper right of your post instead of posting again.
We would usually then add something like this:
(EDIT) Darn it jabarnutcase, why the heck did you sneak in there before me??? :D

Wow! That was so strange.....for a minute there, I thought I saw the exact same question all over again.
I'll be back in a minute. I'll have my wife slap me and make sure I'm awake.
Hmmmmm....on second thought, she might enjoy that too much.
I'll try slapping myself instead. Hang on a second.....
Ouch! I guess I am awake.
Please see post above for solution. ;)

Thanks, guys for your solicitous help.
I can't understand either why the same post from me appeared a second time.
It must have been some key I pressed on accidentally without noticing, and the key started another posting.

OK my screen was flickering before and I just changed the refresh rate to 85 from 75 and there is quite a bit of improvement. Can you guys tell me if this is safe to use?? If so, why didn't you recommend in previous replies to set the rates at 85 (the highest) instead of 75??

85HZ is perfectly fine to use providing your Monitor and Video card can handle it (Which it obviously can).
I simply stated that most people won't notice "flicker" if the refresh rate is set at 75HZ or ABOVE. ;)
In fact, I think there is an option in the settings to hide the refresh rates that your Monitor can't handle....since 85HZ was an available option, and everything is looking good and running fine, you're all set.
By all means use the higher refresh rate if it gets rid of the flicker. :)
