If anyone can help me I'll be extremely grateful.

I have built myself a PC, perhaps it was a bad idea. All the parts are brand new but it doesn't work.

When I switch it on the only thing that happens is a high pitch noise from the power supply. None of the fans work, the POST doesn't start, not even the fan on the power supply works. Switching on and off via the case (connected to the motherboard) does nothing. Un-connecting the motherboard from the power supply stops the high pitch noise but still nothing happens. Is there a problem with the power supply? I have tried unplugged various components, leaving just the memory and chip pluged in but same thing happens.
The specs are as follows;
Soltek SL75KAV motherboard, AMD Athalon 1.1Ghz 266FSB, Crucial 256Mb Ram (CL2 133Mhz), CD-Rom and HDD are UDMA66/100 and connected with apropriate leads.

Any suggestions?

Karl

Dont give up on us yet, did kirk every give up on scotty (no, well maybe once or twice)
Look for you cmos jumper and place it on the other pins i.e, its probably on 1 and 2 put it on 2 and 3, this example look in the motherboard book and see.
If that doesnt work disconnect all drives(meaning hardrive,cdrom etc)( the power cables) then try and see if the cpu fan will spin. If you get the cpu fan spinning then thats a good sign. Post back and let us know something. seeya

Hey,

Oh, oh. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif You may have already fried that Athalon chip. It needs the fan to work immediately, and can fry in 10 seconds without it.

Sounds to me like your power supply is the issue here. Send it back for a replacement. And, don't turn the computer on again without the CPU fan working. With any luck, the chip is still OK. Depends on how long you left the power on to the system.

Good luck.

It is quite possible that every thing is ok, you probably aren't getting any power to the motherboard, it sounds like the power supply fan may have seized up (the high pitched squealing you hear from it) and probably is preventing the power supply from providing any power...so get a replacement for it ASAP.
