I've a 1999 Gateway P3/450Mhz PC with 320Mb RAM. I partitioned my 25 GB 7200rpm hard drive into a C&D drive. I upgraded from win98 to WinME. My system frequently slows down when I'm using IE. If I start another IE session it will eventually freeze. Using Dr.Salman's (Windows Power Tools) I notice my RAM is usualy around 30%. I run RAM cleaner and it gets back to 53%. I use McAfee AnitVirus running. Only other application running is my scanner software.
I used www.pcpitstop.com (http://www.pcpitstop.com) to analyze my PC amd there are issues with my hard drive. I can't get Gateway to support this since I upgraded to WinME.
Anyone have any tips on diagnosing the problem. If you need more info I would be very glad to provide it.

Defragment your drive, and clean some of your temporary internet files out. But im sure pcpitstop pointed that out to you.Great site that is though.

First off what "issues" with your drive?
Secondly, if you leave any anti-virus program running in the background all the time you will cripple performance, check and see what your options are, like doing a scan on just email and downloaded programs instead of an ongoing background scan of everything.
Third, if there are any serious drive problems, I bet if you reloaded the installed OS then you would have "support"...why companies do this is beyond me the hardware doesn't change when you load a different OS and if it can't work with more than one then why bother with it?
Fourth, RAM is not the only thing to be worried about...system resources are more important (go to the system tab on the control panel and then go to the preformance tab)...if they are lower than 50% after a fresh boot, there is way too much running in the background, I have mine over 90% on a fresh boot...go here (http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Window_memory.htm) for a pretty good list of programs that could be turned off, and actually improve performance....

Diurnal you are right I did those things already and Pcpitstop suggested that as well.
MJC, I'm not sure what the hard drive issues are. Strictly performance from what I can tell. I don't find any bad sectors. I usually boot at 80%. Resources dwindle quickly while using IE. It's like it's sucking up RAM and not releasing it.
I shut off MacAfee VirusScan for now. I may uninstall it and then reinstall.
Thanks for you comments...
