Here is my problem. Each time I boot my computer after it has been turned off for over a half-hour, the first time I boot up my BIOS doesn't recognize my 2nd hard drive, but if I restart again the my 2nd hard drive is recognized. Is this a hard drive problem or possibly a short in my motherboard?
Some more system specs would be helpful....

Agree with mjc, but you might go into bios and check hard drive settings. If bios allows do auto detect. I had to do auto detect about 3 times before it took.

Here are my system specs-Thanks for replying:
Abit KT7A Motherboard
1.2 GHz AMD Athlon Processor
512 MB RAM
60 GB IBM Hard Drive
40 GB Maxtor Hard Drive
50X CD-ROM
16x/10x/40x Plextor CD Writer
Windows ME
ATI Radeon VE Dual Display Video Card - 32 MB
DiamondMAX 56K Modem
NIC Card
Cable Modem
HP LaserJet 1100 Printer
Which is the first drive the IBM or the Maxtor and what speeds are they?
Also are they set to auto-detect in BIOS?
If you have the option to slow down the boot process you can try that, (like disable fast-boot), also check your cables.
Are both drives UDMA capable drives? are they slave/master? are the jumpers and cable positions correct?

First drive is IBM, both are 7200 rpm, yes they are set to auto-detect in BIOS and they are UDMA capable and the jumpers are set correctly. THe problem just "appeared" a couple of weeks ago - the set-up had been working fine. I did install a new memory stick - could that be a problem???

Could be take out the other stick of ram and see, if you continue to boot twice for the harddrive to be recognize, then i would replace the harddrive be4 you have alot of data and cant replace it. Does the other have the problem? If it doesnt id say take back the harddrive, also look and the back of the harddrive and see if any pins are bent or pushin. Then try another cable,
Also go to the manufaacturer website, some harddrives need to be set cable select and the other slave.
