Son's girlfriend kicked the c*** out of his CPU. Then no video. can hear system booting. Acts like monitor is not hooked up at all. Ordered and installed new motherboard and video. still same problem. noticed now not all of the motherboard screws will go in case now. Could this be it? What to do?
Ummm...try the monitor on another machine...or another monitor on this machine.
Also make sure that the motherboard screws are not shorting anything out...you can try booting with the board removerd from the case and setting ion a non-conductive surface.

Thank you for the reply. We have tried two monitors on this machine. I have pulled the board and tried it on a non-conductive surface. Same effect. I have used the monitor on my machine as well, same effect. This truly has me baffled.

try checking the video card (if there is one) - make sure it is fully in the slot.

I wish. We have tried that several times and have tried more than one AGP Video card. But thank you!

charley....
'Bout down to RAM and CPU. Is the speaker giving you any beep codes?
Swapping out monitors doesn't work. Any bent pins anywhere?
Did said girlfriend say she was sorry?
Luck.

Cut your losses. Pitch the monitor, machine, and most importantly the girlfriend!

No, Ranchdog, she did not. She is still mad at him.
Can you explain what you mean? Was working fine until the blowout. No beeps. Put all on a new motherboard with a new video card thinking because she warped the case she might have broken circuits somewhere. Now have same problem with new board and video. Maybe I will try swapping out the ram. Worth a try.
Thanks, cmc

Nice thought, but he can't afford another one right now. He had just started a new web design business. Now he is hogging mine. Something has to work.
Thanks, cmc

Am I getting this right: Girlfriend's son kicked the begeebers out of his computer and now you're letting him use yours?
And, you're not worried about yours?

What parts do you have that new?
Try a new case & power supply...

ok, ok, maybe it is funny on that end. mine is safe, they don't live even in this town.
I have a new motherboard and video card. help me to understand how a case and power supply would make the difference. I have the motherboard currently out of the case sitting on non-conductive surface, but it is using the same power supply. guess it would be worth the try.
I haven't dealth with this type chip before either. Guess you just replace the whole card.
He did say it was on when she way-laid it with her big foot. Before he got it unplugged, he said it was making an awful noise, the cpu fan. However, since it has been here, has made no awful noises.

So, you swapped the MB (identical?)...and used the same CPU heatsink and fan? What processor, AMD/Intel? Do we know if the CPU is "toast?" If she knocked the board so that the CPU fan connection came loose, or altered it's rotation significantly...takes but a second to pass into CPU heaven!

The MB is pretty much identical, layout was the same. Intel.
Same CPU, heatsink and fan. I don't know if the CPU is toast. I don't have one to swap out with it. Do you think one of the local shops have a way of checking it?

sure if it is a repuatable shop they should have a way to check it but see if you can't whatch them do it (not that i don't trust people) but money is money.

OK, I have a revision to the original post. It is not booting at all. I swapped power supplies, only it was max output at 120w where original is 130w. Will that make any difference? With swapped power supply, there was no change. No boot. No video.

OK Charly,
Still waiting to see if changing out the RAM works.
My bet would be something shorted out and burnt the CPU or RAM or both.
At this point, with having spent money on a MOBO and Vid card, my recommendation is to keep going, one step at a time, until you get it working.
one stick of inexpensive 128Mgb RAM....$10.00
750 Duron CPU....under $50.00
Check New Egg (http://www.newegg.com), Edgemicro (http://www.edgemicro.com), and Comp Geeks (http://www.computergeeks.com) for some prices.
Good luck

Ok, swapped out RAM, no effect. It takes DIMM chips and paperwork with MB says it is intelligent and will recognize either DIMMs. Talked to a computer shop on the phone and asked him if he could test this CPU chip, he said the BIOS has to be set to recognize the new MB and Video. I told him it would not boot, he said I needed to boot to a setup floppy. not. Anyway, do you agree it must be the CPU chip?
Is there a big difference in power supplies? one of mine is 120w and 50/60hz and this one is 130w and 60/50hz. Thank you for all your help.
I would take the new parts you have order a new case and start assembling everthing from the ground up, starting with the new parts in the new case, and if possible check parts (like drives) from the beat up machine on another machine before installing them on the new board. And grab a new CPU while at it...wihtout being able to test the current one, I don't think it would be likely you'll have much success.
Also what kind of compouter was this to begin with...if it was an off the shelf system (HP, Compaq, etc) then swapping the motherboard will prevent the restore disk from being used, so you would need a full version of the operating system to reinstall it.

This was labeled A+ Computers. Originally it was won from school. Anyway, seems that is what is going to have to happen. I will order a new CPU and case. RAM too? Probably, better. Oh what fun a temper can cause.
