Just put in XP. Seems to run fine. Has issues with my older non w2k compliant software. But, I noticed my vid card/soundcard/lan card all have the same irq(3). I think it's due to the ACPI thing. Pretty sure this can't be good but I've not experienced any problems thus far. What usually happens when so many devices are given the same irq? Should I change them or leave them since there's no conflicts anyways?

Oh, and my pc speaker now randomly (but rarely) emits a low beeping sound after installing XP. Never heard a beep like this one. Not that annoying high pitched error/warning beep. Anyone else run into it?

XP-eXtra terrestrial Products, Its the aliens talking to that place in your brain that you can't control. If you can hear it, then you obviously have a sixth sense they could not forsee. You should remove XP from your system and alert the world to what has happened to you!

As for the IRQ thing, it seems like I read a little something about XP managing IRQs ...differently.?. Might be wrong on this.
If all is working well, I would let it be. At leased you are aware of it and if things go haywire, you know where to start.
The PC speaker would not be affected by your soundcard, so I would look into a BIOS update for your MOBO to work with XP.
Boy-o-boy are we gonna see some weirdness from this one(XP) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Open the main volume controls and look for Advanced settings. You should find a check box toward the bottom with something related to 3D sound or Audio Boost or something similar. (Different sound cards have different names for it, it's Advanced 3D Effect on this one.) Uncheck that box and see if the beeping goes away. On this machine if I enable it I can hear Ham radio or maybe it's TV or AM stations, I'm not sure...but till I unchecked it I definitely heard voices and static from radio frequencies...like listening to an old 60's palm size AM transistor radio not tuned in well (yes I once had one)...but not running XP, this one's win98SE.

That's some weird stuff Paleopete. Anyways, I'll do as you guys suggest and hopefully the problem will go away. Not really a big one anyway, I'd just like to know why it happens.

According to some of the things I've read about XP, I wouldn't be surprised if everything ended up on IRQ and worked fine...it is supposed be a PnP dream, with well designed IRQ sharing that really works (well at least that is the hype...), but like bassman said if it works I wouldn't mess with it, you could end up creating problems. It doesn't use DOS and most of the IRQ problems come when trying to keep them all straight for DOS, and when it emulates a DOS environment for running an older app it is supposed to assign the IRQs in a way that the app would expect them to be assigned (in other words it will lie to the app about the IRQ assignments...)

Dont know what to say guys. I have been having XP for a week now and is doing great. I had a few glitches with audio and video drivers but it was only a matter of downloading the right drivers for XP. So far I am happy and hope is going to be succesfull like my old Win98SE.
cheers
