View Full Version : Slower than normal access

Gentlemen, over the last weeks my puter seems to take longer to access SOME applications; particularly getting on line eg. When I activate OE icon or any web icon there is quite a long time lapse before the dialog box appears. There are several other examples but I would first like to know whether the cause may have something to do with the following: at bootup, (and before I select whether to open in DOS or Windows[98]), among the messages on the screen is "S.M.A.R.T. capability .... NONE". I have never noticed this before. Does this point to a configuration error which I can correct; or do I have a more complex problem.
Sorry to be so wordy. Thanks for any help. Ray Stainer.

Ray Not possative on this one but start backing up stuff
Message:
S.M.A.R.T. (Self Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology)
Steps to try:
This system was developed by Western Digital to warn users of hard drive failures. If the system is showing any S.M.A.R.T. Errors (other than telling the user that the S.M.A.R.T. capability is disabled), the drive will need to be replaced. http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/infobrf/ibsmart.html
go here too this may not be the problem but better safe than sorry?

Thank you for your reply from which I understand that because the message contains the word "NONE" there is in fact Nothing wrong with the Hard Disk.
....or NOT.

Yes ray I went back through and re-read all that and yes with the word "NONE" their is "Nothing" wrong with hard drive sorry for worrying you

I seen the word S.M.A.R.T. I jumped the gun. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
as far as i know is that S.M.A.R.T. is built into some computers and is nothing to worry about as long as the word NONE proceeds. It is like an early warning system. For Hard drive problems.
as far as being slow to access Internet could be a lot of traffic?
if you are on dial-up could be a number of things traffic, bad connection, old phone lines?
have you run scan disk and defraged latley?
