Hi all When tried to install another h/d with windows me as o/s into this board gigabyte workstation it went into a continuous boot it never completes the boot the windows me screen flashes then it will ask if I want to boot in safe or normal clicking on either doesn’t matter it will get to the same point and reboot. I can take this same hard drive and install it on another pc and it works perfect. I go to install a new hd it will format and start to install w/me o/s but when it goes to reboot to finish loading windows me it starts the continuous loop again. I then took the same h/d and finish loading it in another pc but if I try to install it on the gigabyte board it to will go into a boot loop. If I try to load xp on another h/d I get the error no h/d found. Also if I reinstall the 1st h/d the one I 1st built the system with(it has win xp pro for an o/s) it loads and works flawlessly.
I’ve reset cmos several times and loaded default setting just as many times and nothing works.

You could try just one of the sticks of RAM. WinME doeesnt like to go over 512. You could also try limiting the amount used by the system by running msconfig (I think its in the Advanced Settings - but it is there somewhere).

An alternative approach is to change the vcache settings. (http://www.putergeek.com/vcache/index.shtml)

The Vcache settings need to be made whilst only 512 is actually physically installed. Once the setting has been set - the computer can have additional RAM added to it - but the additional RAM wont be used; this is useful if you are multibooting with WinXP etc. I personally use MaxFileCache=523264 (or 511MB) for Win98 but use msconfig for WinME.

Of course the above is just an idea - perhaps you actually have another problem. Presumably you are dual-booting since the post is about ME but your specs state XP.

thx for responding, i am not dual booting i just have access to about 4 h/d's i remove one and try anothe. i'm going to try removing all sticks of ram except for the 256 and give that a shot.
also when i try to install win xp pro i get the error unable to detect h/d.

Hi all When tried to install another h/d with windows me as o/s into this board...

Looks like two problems. First, as mentioned already ME can't handle more than 512MB RAM.

Second, if I read this right, you're trying to install a drive with ME already installed on it. That means it's trying to use motherboard specific drivers related to another board, which rarely works and is flaky at best. The preferred way to go is a fresh format and install, rather than trying to make it work on a different motherboard.

For the XP problem of drive not being found, check the jumpers on the hard drive. Most newer drives using 80 conductor cables work best jumpered as Cable Select. If it doesn't work that way, get the drive manufacturer's software and test it, you might have a bad drive.

thx for responding 1st off I reduced the mem down to 256 and installed the drive with wnme and it worked fine, I then replaced that drive that I couldn't get xp to load on you know the same one that was getting hard drive not reconized error well I reformatted that one and it to loaded without a hitch.I then reinstall the xtra memory and all is well with xp as for the winme your right it dosen't like all that ram.
